He was so selfless. He had such a big heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would have done anything for anybody,\u201d Murray added. \u201cHe did not deserve this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-async>Burchat was a member of the parachute company of <span>3rd Battalion <\/span>Princess Patricia\u2019s Canadian Light Infantry. They spent nearly every day together and liked driving around listening to music.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 1, he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know where he was,\u201d Murray said. \u201cI called every hospital. I called the remand centre. They said, \u2018We can\u2019t give you information.\u2019 If I knew he was in there, I would have done something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to court records, Burchat was accused of assaulting a person and damaging their cellphone on Dec. 2. He was charged with counts of assault, mischief under $5,000, and failing to comply with a release order requiring him to \u201ckeep the peace and be of good behaviour.\u201d His next court date was Jan. 31, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Murray learned of her boyfriend\u2019s death from one of his brothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s left to wonder why exactly Burchat was in remand and why his mental health issues \u2014 which she says were well-documented \u2014 weren\u2019t better accommodated. She did not recognize the name of the man he was accused of assaulting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of his records, it should have shown that he should have been either a mental institution or some sort of section that\u2019s not with the regular population,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>The man accused in his homicide remains in custody and has not been identified pending charges.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Systemic lapses\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Edmonton Remand Centre is the largest jail in Canada with room for 1,952 inmates, most of whom are awaiting trial rather than serving sentences.<\/p>\n<p data-async>In recent years, it has been the subject of several critical reports. In 2023, Alberta\u2019s Public Interest Commissioner <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"found\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/crime\/public-interest-commissioner-finds-systemic-lapses-in-medical-care-for-edmonton-remand-centre-inmates-including-two-who-died\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/crime\/public-interest-commissioner-finds-systemic-lapses-in-medical-care-for-edmonton-remand-centre-inmates-including-two-who-died\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> \u201csystemic lapses\u201d in medical care contributed to inmate deaths and hospitalizations.
