Thursday night&#8217;s Orange Bowl winner will also make history, as either Franklin or Freeman will become<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/columnist\/mike-freeman\/2025\/01\/07\/marcus-freeman-james-franklin-national-championship-game\/77485130007\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0the first Black head coach to reach an FBS national championship football game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin of No. 6-seeded Penn State (13-2) and Freeman of No. 7 Notre Dame (13-1) are far more than competitors. They are pioneers, shattering one of the sport\u2019s last enduring barriers in a season already defined by redemption and resilience.<\/p>\n<p><span>Their paths to Miami, however, couldn\u2019t be more different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Franklin\u2019s decade-plus-long tenure at Penn State is a study in persistence, as he has led the program from NCAA sanctions to national contention. Since 2014 at Penn State, he has a 101-41 record, claimed a Big Ten title and guided his team to success as much through relationships as results.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t usually talk about this publicly,\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onwardstate.com\/2019\/10\/12\/james-franklin-my-goal-is-to-be-first-african-american-football-coach-to-win-national-championship\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThat's%20something%20that's%20very%20historic,other%20guys%20in%20the%20future.%E2%80%9D\">\u00a0<span>Franklin told the 24\/7 College football podcast<\/span><\/a> in 2019, \u201cbut my goal is to be the first African-American football coach to win a college national championship. That\u2019s something that\u2019s very historic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, Freeman\u2019s rise reads like a Hollywood script.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The son of an Air Force veteran, Freeman was thrust into the spotlight as Notre Dame\u2019s head coach in 2021, stumbling through three straight losses to start his tenure after succeeding Brian Kelly as head coach. Critics questioned if he could<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/notredame\/football\/marcus-freeman-and-notre-dame-are-already-at-a-crossroads\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>handle the pressure of leading<\/a><span>\u00a0one of college football\u2019s most storied programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But Freeman turned adversity into fuel.<\/p>\n<p><span>After a shocking early-season loss to Northern Illinois this season \u2014making Notre Dame<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/northern-illinois-shocks-no-5-notre-dame-on-late-field-goal-for-macs-first-win-vs-top-five-team-in-history\/\">\u00a0<span>the first AP top-five team to fall to a Mid-American Conference opponent<\/span><\/a> \u2014 he didn\u2019t just regroup. He transformed. Twelve straight wins, including two convincing CFP victories, stamped the Fighting Irish\u2019s ticket to Miami.<\/p>\n<p><span>Freeman\u2019s authenticity has defined his success. \u201cAt the end of the day, you\u2019ve still got to be yourself,\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-football\/how-marcus-freeman-evolved-to-lead-notre-dame-on-the-biggest-stage\">\u00a0<span>Freeman told Bryan Fischer of Sports Illustrated<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t be anybody other than Marcus Freeman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>The journeys of Franklin and Freeman converge Thursday, but the weight of this moment extends far beyond the Orange Bowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>College football has long lagged in leadership diversity.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/whats-next-for-black-representation-in-college-football-coaching-key-figures-weigh-in-amid-slight-increase\/\">\u00a0<span>According to Carl Reed of cbssports.com<\/span><\/a>, of the 134 FBS programs, only 16 employed Black head coaches before the 2024 season \u2014 a sobering statistic in a sport where 48.9% of the players are Black.<\/p>\n<p><span>The historical echoes add another layer. Seventy-eight years ago,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/campus-life\/story\/why-we-say-we-are\">\u00a0<span>Penn State refused to play a segregated Miami team<\/span><\/a>, a defiant stand against racial injustice that eventually birthed the iconic chant \u201cWe Are Penn State.\u201d Now, Franklin and his Nittany Lions return to South Florida to write a new chapter in that legacy.<\/p>\n<p><span>This game, however, isn\u2019t just about breaking barriers. It\u2019s about how these men have redefined leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Franklin\u2019s openness with his players<a href=\"https:\/\/nittanysportsnow.com\/2023\/12\/james-franklin-cultivating-a-culture-where-playing-in-bowl-games-matters\/\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>has fostered a culture<\/a><span>\u00a0of trust and accountability, while Freeman has built a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-football\/notre-dame-finds-joy-in-finally-winning-on-big-stage-at-sugar-bowl\">\u00a0<span>team that thrives on collective purpose<\/span><\/a>. They\u2019ve shown that authenticity and ambition aren\u2019t opposing forces \u2014 they\u2019re the keys to success.<\/p>\n<p><span>When the confetti falls in Miami, this game&#8217;s result will linger far beyond the field. Somewhere in America, young coaches will watch Franklin and Freeman under the brightest lights and may see their own futures take shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One coach will move on for a chance to hoist the ultimate trophy.
