Chuck Todd said his first reaction to hearing that ABC News had settled a defamation suit<\/a> with Donald Trump for $15 million was \u201cshock\u201d \u2014 and that by not supporting George Stephanopoulos\u2019 right to mention Trump\u2019s conviction \u2014 the the jury finding him liable for sexual abuse \u2014 in E. Jean Carroll\u2019s defamation lawsuit, the network essentially abandoned him.<\/p>\n

The former \u201cMeet the Press\u201d host told fellow journalist Chris Cillizza<\/a> on Monday that the settlement was \u201cstunning to me\u201d and \u201cabsolutely a gut punch to anybody that works at a major media company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Todd continued, \u201cI think it sets a precedent that is going to be very difficult to get out from under, potentially.\u201d He added that he doesn\u2019t know why the network, which is owned by Disney, settled rather than pursue it in court since, as he figured, the odds of ABC News losing were as low as 5%.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were in the situation that George was in, I would feel like my network abandoned me,\u201d Todd told Cillizza. \u201cMaybe there was more liability that I don\u2019t know about. Maybe there was something else that I don\u2019t know, but [based on] everything I know, I would feel like I was abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cillizza explained, \u201cWhat we do know is that Debra O\u2019Connell, who is in charge of ABC News overseas, ABC News via Disney, was at Mar-a-Lago having dinner with Susie Wiles, the incoming Chief of Staff.\u201d He then reiterated that networks cozying up to Trump indeed \u201csets a precedent,\u201d<\/a> especially after Amazon and Meta both pledged $1 million each to the president-elect\u2019s inauguration fund.<\/p>\n

He added that corporations seemed to be \u201caccommodating Trump,\u201d to which Todd replied, \u201cThat\u2019s certainly what it looks like, and it looks terrible \u2026 I have raised this before, publicly traded companies right now, owning news organizations are not \u2014 it\u2019s not going well. It\u2019s just not going well.\u201d<\/p>\n
