{"id":818559,"date":"2025-01-09T18:11:50","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/09\/family-physicians-see-culture-improve-challenge-rvu-system\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T18:11:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:11:50","slug":"family-physicians-see-culture-improve-challenge-rvu-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/09\/family-physicians-see-culture-improve-challenge-rvu-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Physicians See Culture Improve, Challenge RVU System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business News <\/p>\n<div check-ads-type=\"true\">\n<p>Family care physicians are seeing steady or gradual improvements in several key aspects of running their practices, according to the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/slideshow\/2024-family-med-practice-issues-6017796#1\">Family Medicine Practice Issues Report 2024<\/a>\u201d by <em>Medscape Medical News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The report was based on data from several Medscape surveys conducted between January and June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Among the report\u2019s findings: Family medicine physicians (23%) were more likely than doctors overall (16%) to report improvements in the quality of their workplace culture.<\/p>\n<p>Another 48% of the family medicine physicians surveyed said the quality of their workplace culture was holding steady, and 29% said it was declining.<\/p>\n<p>Santina Wheat, MD, MPH, a family physician and associate professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, told <em>Medscape Medical News<\/em> these findings reflected a growing investment in primary care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganizations have demonstrated \u2014 with words and actions \u2014 that primary care is important, and they have to invest in improving the culture and happiness within the clinic space,\u201d Wheat said. \u201cSome of it is reducing the administrative burden; some of it is helping to dial back the work tensions that grew during COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, challenges still remain in the way physician productivity is assessed, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>About 7 in 10 family physicians said the approach based on relative value units (RVUs) was at least \u201csomewhat\u201d misguided in measuring their work output.<\/p>\n<p>When family physicians were asked how well RVUs measured their productivity, 49% answered \u201csomewhat poorly,\u201d and 19% replied \u201cvery poorly.\u201d In contrast, only 1% believed RVUs measured productivity \u201cvery well,\u201d and 31% said \u201csomewhat well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda Girgis, MD, a family physician in South River, New Jersey, said the RVU-based system often pushes physicians to prioritize seeing more patients over taking time to deliver quality care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think RVUs incent you to deliver a higher number of services rather than provide quality care and quality outcomes,\u201d Girgis said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/family-physicians-see-culture-improve-challenge-rvu-system-2025a10000ch\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Augustine Redner<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Family care physicians are seeing steady or gradual improvements in several key aspects of running their practices, according to the \u201cFamily Medicine Practice Issues Report 2024\u201d by Medscape Medical News.
