{"id":817347,"date":"2025-01-05T09:15:55","date_gmt":"2025-01-05T15:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/05\/the-plastics-crisis-is-now-a-global-human-health-crisis-experts-say\/"},"modified":"2025-01-05T09:15:55","modified_gmt":"2025-01-05T15:15:55","slug":"the-plastics-crisis-is-now-a-global-human-health-crisis-experts-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/05\/the-plastics-crisis-is-now-a-global-human-health-crisis-experts-say\/","title":{"rendered":"The plastics crisis is now a global human health crisis, experts say"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<article id=\"post-290316\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Plastics can contain thousands of different chemicals, many of them linked to cancer and reproductive harm, and many never tested for safety.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Multiple studies are now finding these chemicals, along with microplastics, throughout the human body, raising alarm among scientists about widespread health effects, including reduced fertility and increased obesity.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Research points to a correlation between the presence of microplastics and endocrine disrupting plasticizers in the human body and a variety of serious maladies, but tracing a direct causal line is very difficult given the complexity and number of plastics and the industry\u2019s lack of transparency regarding its products.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Many scientists and nations are calling for a binding plastics treaty to limit global plastic production. But this week the U.S. took a weaker position; it now supports a policy in which nations set their own voluntary targets for reducing production. Negotiations to determine the final treaty language begin at a UN summit in Busan, Korea, running Nov. 25 \u2013 Dec. 1.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s been clear for some time: We\u2019re in the midst of a rapidly escalating global plastics crisis. More than 11 billion metric tons of virgin plastics were produced worldwide from 1950 to 2022. And the rate of production has soared, with at least 71% of all plastics ever made produced in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Of all those billions of tons manufactured, three-quarters were discarded in landfills, open dumps or directly into the environment. Today, our oceans, beaches, rivers, cities and wild places are awash in discarded plastic and synthetic textiles, while microplastics have been detected from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43017-022-00279-8\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">pole<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/tc.copernicus.org\/articles\/16\/2127\/2022\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">pole<\/a>, on remote mountaintops and in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/10\/up-in-the-air-study-finds-microplastics-in-high-altitude-cloud-water\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">clouds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In view of the tremendous buildup of visible trash, it\u2019s not surprising that the plastics crisis so far has mostly been treated as a problem of poor waste management and consumer choice. Likewise, efforts for a fix have largely focused on recycling and consumer education.<\/p>\n<p>But talking about plastic as a litter problem ignores one of the most alarming facets of our plastic addiction: its impacts on human health.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-mounting evidence points to microplastics entering the human body and doing internal damage. Likewise, thousands of chemicals that leach out of plastics are finding their way into our bodies (via food wrappers, storage containers, cooking utensils and other routes) with some of those chemicals linked to a range of health impacts, including immune suppression and cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590332224005414\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">new report<\/a> out Nov. 7th in the journal <em>One Earth<\/em>, an international group of researchers attempted to gather all of plastic\u2019s myriad negative impacts into a global framework ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/inc-plastic-pollution\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">final round of negotiations for a global plastics treaty<\/a> scheduled to run Nov. 25 to Dec. 1 in Busan, Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The report puts it bluntly: \u201cDespite the manifest benefits of plastics, plastics pollution now threatens the environment, food security, and human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_281844\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/08131021\/ryan-brooklyn-e5Ja8Z_WEvA-unsplash.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\"  ><figcaption>As researchers, policymakers and the public seek plastic pollution solutions, the petrochemical industry continues churning out new plastics in astronomical amounts. Image by Ryan Brooklyn via <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/a-pile-of-garbage-sitting-next-to-a-bus-e5Ja8Z_WEvA\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Unsplash<\/a> (Public domain).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What\u2019s lurking inside that spatula?<\/h2>\n<p>The trouble starts at the very beginning of the supply chain, when petroleum is extracted and processed into the petrochemical ingredients for plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Plastics are often marketed as if they are simple, pure polymers \u2014 labeled, for example, as polyester, polyurethane, PVC and more. And while we do know that PVC and polystyrene <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/01\/as-the-world-swims-in-plastic-some-offer-an-answer-ban-the-toxic-two\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">can leach hazardous substances<\/a> such as styrene, phthalates and vinyl chloride, there are other dangers lurking in these generically labeled polymers.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic packaging, toys, clothing, kitchenware and construction materials almost always include a proprietary mix of chemicals: processing aids and additives such as plasticizers, flame retardants and pigments, which can make up to 70% of their weight, according to the <em>One Earth<\/em> report.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these chemicals are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductively and developmentally toxic. Of the more than 16,000 chemicals used to make plastic, or present in plastic materials and products, more than 4,200 \u2014 up to two\u2013thirds of the chemicals used or found in well-studied plastic types \u2014 are of concern because they are persistent, bioaccumulative, mobile and\/or toxic. Hazard information is lacking for another 10,000.<\/p>\n<p>But research has shown that these chemicals don\u2019t stay inside plastics; untold numbers of them, in unknown amounts, end up inside us. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41370-024-00718-2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">A study published in September<\/a> found that more than 3,600 chemicals are found in both plastic food packaging and in human blood, indicating that these chemicals are leaching out of plastics \u2014 whether from packaging into food or from microplastics that we ingest into our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are scrambling to understand what plastic and its chemical additives are doing to us, an effort greatly slowed by a stunning lack of transparency from the petrochemical industry as to what chemicals are in what plastics.<\/p>\n<p>But scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/29\/plastics-cause-wide-ranging-health-issues-from-cancer-to-birth-defects-landmark-study-finds\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">are increasingly warning<\/a> that the rising rates of cancer, lung disease, infertility and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9124454\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">obesity<\/a> are due not solely to lifestyle factors but to environmental pollutants, including those in plastics. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcpp.org\/chemicals-from-unrecyclable-plastics-increase-breast-cancer-risk-study-finds\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">a May 2024 study<\/a> linked higher rates of breast cancer to the presence in outdoor air of chemicals used to make polystyrene and PVC plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular concern are plasticizers, or endocrine disrupting chemicals added to plastics to make them soft and pliable, including BPA and its many bisphenol cousins and phthalates. PFAS, a toxic class of chemicals known as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they never break down or go away, are also endocrine disruptors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-takes-action-protect-people-pfas-leach-plastic-containers-pesticides-and-other\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">often found in plastics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hormone disrupting chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/health-topics\/chemical-safety\/reducing-health-risks-from-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals#tab=tab_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">have been associate<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/health-topics\/chemical-safety\/reducing-health-risks-from-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals#tab=tab_1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">d<\/a> with hormone-related cancers, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7311014\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">A 2020 meta analysis<\/a> showed that people with higher levels of endocrine disruptors in their bodies were more likely to be obese. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10100123\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">A 2022 study<\/a> showed that the presence of more endocrine disruptors in the bodies of women trying to get pregnant was associated with a lower chance of success.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic makers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/02\/15\/1231690415\/plastic-recycling-waste-oil-fossil-fuels-climate-change\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">have traditionally proposed recyclin<\/a>g as the solution to the plastics crisis. But recycling done wrong can amplify plastic\u2019s toxicity. Take for example, black plastic spatulas, takeout containers and even children\u2019s toys were recently found to contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2024\/10\/black-plastic-spatula-flame-retardants\/680452\/?utm_campaign=morning_rounds&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_3PiJuL6VyPgKdjB48gBtxPumE9qQiKTP0UtzTdQ82wW7crmMtXBmDZL1tkKgAzkUJPSSYw1IE1df_NSlmc-XfV49eKg&#038;_hsmi=331837554&#038;utm_content=331837554&#038;utm_source=hs_email\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">high levels of flame retardants<\/a> and flagged as a public health problem. That\u2019s because the black plastic used to make electronics (which can be toxic and was never intended for use in connection with food) is frequently recycled in developing nations (where there is little to no regulation or oversight) and turned into new plastic products.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic products continue to be a potential source of toxins even after disposal. While a single-digit percentage of plastics get recycled, an estimated 14% of all the plastic ever created has been incinerated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/bio\/daniel-rosenberg\/burned-why-waste-incineration-harmful\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">which can release<\/a> plastics into the air and environment in the form of tiny particulates (linked to lung and heart disease), heavy metals such as lead and mercury and dioxins, which have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/dioxins-and-their-effects-on-human-health\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">linked to<\/a> impairment of the immune system, reproductive system and the development of the nervous system in children.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290319\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/19132131\/plastic.jpg\" alt width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\"  ><figcaption>Talking about plastic as a litter problem ignores one of the most alarming facets of our plastic addiction: its impacts on human health. Plastics over time degrade into smaller and smaller pieces. The result is microplastics, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20240110-microplastics-are-everywhere-is-it-possible-to-reduce-our-exposure\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">are found everywhere on Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Microplastics from many sources find their way into our bodies in a typical day: Plastic microfibers are <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1420326X241248054?journalCode=ibeb#:~:text=Microplastics%20(MPs)%2C%20measuring%20less,within%20indoor%20house%20dust%20samples.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">shed from clothing and furnishings<\/a>; nanoplastics leach out of food packaging and containers (especially when we microwave them). Microplastics are found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935120305703\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">produce we eat<\/a>, tap water and, especially, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/bottled-water-nanoplastics-8426960\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">bottled water<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0194970#sec023\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">beer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6132564\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">seafood<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/interactive\/2024\/microplastics-air-human-body-organs-spread\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">air we breathe<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-020-00171-y\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">One study<\/a> found that microplastics can end up in baby formula when it\u2019s prepared in polyethylene bottles.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve also been found throughout the human body \u2014 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/aug\/21\/microplastics-brain-pollution-health\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">brain tissue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/bottled-water-nanoplastics-8426960\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">lungs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/toxsci\/kfae021\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">placentas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4360\/14\/13\/2700\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">breast milk<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35835713\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"> livers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/toxsci\/advance-article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/toxsci\/kfae060\/7673133?redirectedFrom=fulltext&#038;login=false\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">testes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/mar\/24\/microplastics-found-in-human-blood-for-first-time\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">blood<\/a>. The microscopic plastics found in humans range from PET (used in polyester clothing and plastic water bottles) to polyethylene (stretchy plastic, milk jugs and shampoo bottles) and PVC (shower curtains, vinyl construction products and clear plastic fashion accessories).<\/p>\n<p>How microplastics interact with human organs or how they impact body function remains largely unknown, as microplastics and health is a new field of study. But alarm bells are already sounding in the scientific community.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2309822\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">study published in March<\/a> found that half of patients with asymptomatic cardiovascular disease had microplastics in their carotid artery plaque and were at higher risk of a heart attack, stroke and death in the next three years than those who did not. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34935363\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">A similar correlation<\/a> has been found between the presence of microplastics in feces and inflammatory bowel disease. In the lab, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/2021\/research\/microplastics-harmful-human-cells\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">microplastics can be deadly to human cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_241056\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/03\/29205750\/3-21282786668_2ce70ca17c_k.jpg\" alt width=\"2048\" height=\"1346\"  ><figcaption>Microplastics are found in the produce we eat, tap water and, especially, bottled water, beer, seafood and the air we breathe. And at least one of those rodent studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news\/microplastics-are-inside-us-all-what-does-mean-our-health\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">found<\/a> that even \u201cclean\u201d microplastics that are free of hazardous additives can cause health problems.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note here, correlation does not prove causality: Scientists say it may take years to trace the precise mechanisms by which microplastics and thousands of plastic additives impact our health. In the meantime, the American Chemistry Council has responded to these early warnings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2024\/03\/11\/microplastics-health-impacts-unknown\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">by saying the research is inconclusive<\/a> and pointing to the complexity of plastics.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s true: Microplastic particles may be almost as unique as snowflakes \u2014 they come in all sizes, shapes, colors and types, containing secretive mixtures of thousands of chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>This complexity means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2024\/03\/11\/microplastics-health-impacts-unknown\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">it might be impossible<\/a> to find a definitive causal (as opposed to correlative) link to myriad potential health effects \u2026 at least within our lifetimes. That\u2019s why many scientists are urging world leaders to adhere to the precautionary principle and take action to protect human and animal health now, based on the evidence we have so far. Image by UNEP via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/unep\/53688949353\/in\/album-72177720316351674\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Flickr<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">CC BY-NC-SA 2.0<\/a>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Taking action against an insidious threat<\/h2>\n<p>When confronted with these alarming public health studies, some people look for ways to reduce their personal exposure to plastic, microplastics and additives.<\/p>\n<p>But because plastics and microplastics are ubiquitous \u2014 because there are no mandated disclosures about what is in plastic products and because so many chemicals in plastics have never been analyzed for their health impacts \u2014 it has become an impossible task for individuals or communities to avoid plastic\u2019s harms altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlastics are seen as those inert products that protect our favorite products or that make our lives easier that can be \u2018easily cleaned up\u2019 once they become waste. But this is far from reality,\u201d says PhD candidate Patricia Villarrubia-G\u00f3mez at the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University and lead author of the <em>One Earth<\/em> report. \u201cPlastics are made out of the combination of thousands of chemicals \u2026 with which we interact on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers, activists and a 66 nation coalition known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/hactoendplasticpollution.org\/hac-member-states-ministerial-joint-statement-for-inc-5\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution<\/a> are calling for the full life cycle of plastics to be regulated, from the extraction of petroleum, to the creation of plastic\u2019s petrochemical ingredients and their safe disposal. They\u2019ll make their case at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/inc-plastic-pollution\/session-5\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">fifth U.N. plastics treaty summit<\/a> to be held Nov. 25 to Dec. 1 in Busan, South Korea, where delegates hope to finalize treaty language for future ratification by the world\u2019s nations.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/us-support-plastic-production-limits-industry-un-treaty-negotiations\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">indicated it would support limits<\/a> on plastic production, which, scientists and advocates say, would be the simplest solution to protecting human health.
