{"id":817204,"date":"2025-01-05T02:13:45","date_gmt":"2025-01-05T08:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/05\/mace-wins-93m-weather-centre-job\/"},"modified":"2025-01-05T02:13:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-05T08:13:45","slug":"mace-wins-93m-weather-centre-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/05\/mace-wins-93m-weather-centre-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Mace wins \u00a393m weather centre job"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/emap-romulus-prod.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/Mace_Reading_ecmwf.jpg\"   alt=\"Mace_Reading_ecmwf.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mace has formally been appointed on the \u00a392.6m main construction contract to build a new headquarters for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECWMF).<\/p>\n<p>The contractor has helped draw up designs for the new building, at Reading University\u2019s Whiteknights Campus, after being<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/mace-to-build-reading-weather-watching-hq-03-11-2023\/\"> appointed on a pre-construction services agreement<\/a> in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>After signing the main contract last month, Mace will start work on the project in February, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The new four-storey facility will accommodate up to 300 scientists and support staff working on weather prediction systems, forecasting and research into climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The 10,600 square metres headquarters will join the campus\u2019s other weather and climate research facilities to create what the university claims will be the world\u2019s largest cluster of meteorological buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Other buildings on the campus include the University of Reading&#8217;s Department of Meteorology and facilities for the UK Met Office, NERC National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences and NERC National Centre for Earth Observation.<\/p>\n<p>The building, granted planning permission by Wokingham Borough Council in February last year, is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating and will be low carbon in construction and operation.<\/p>\n<p>It will be clad in limestone and reconstituted stone and PPC aluminium, using passive technology principles.<\/p>\n<p>The ECWMF, founded in 1975, is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 34 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Its current headquarters at Shinfield Park, south of Reading, is no longer suitable to meet the needs of the longer-term needs of the ECWMF and it is not feasible to upgrade the site due to the constraints of the existing buildings, according to planning documents.<\/p>\n<p>The new building will be built on the site of the demolished single-storey block occupied by the University of Reading Art School.<\/p>\n<p>Mace was appointed to the project by the Government Property Agency (GPA) through the Crown Commercial Service framework.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/mace-wins-93m-weather-centre-job-03-01-2025\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Colin Marrs<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mace has formally been appointed on the \u00a392.6m main construction contract to build a new headquarters for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECWMF).
