But it all began a member of a \u201cone-hit-wonder\u201d group which had a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSaks died on Nov. 16 of Parkinsonism-related causes. He was 79. News of his death was confirmed by Peter Gelb of The Metropolitan Opera.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSaks won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/jay-david-saks\/14077\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/jay-david-saks\/14077\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">13 Grammys<\/a> between 1983 and 2014, eight for classical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/t\/music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_music\" data-tag=\"music\">music<\/a> and five for his work on Broadway cast albums.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe won best opera recording four times, all for work with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra\/The Metropolitan Opera Chorus. He won for <em>Verdi: La Traviata<\/em> <em>Opera Recording; Adams: Doctor Atomic; Wagner: Der Ring Des Nibelungen <\/em>and <em>Ad\u00e8s: The Tempest.<\/em><\/p>\n<div data-pmc-adm-ad-id=\"10140328\">\n<h3>\n\t\t\tTrending on Billboard\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\tHe won best musical show album five times for cast albums from <em>Into the Woods<\/em> and <em>Jerome Robbins\u2019 Broadway<\/em> and revivals of <em>Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Gypsy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"Prologue: Into The Woods\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/joNRtJXWQvQ?list=PLaHwSBnw447ppIeu6ezdpOVnUYXvP7sdN\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\tIn addition, Saks won two Daytime Emmys, both for his work on <em>Great Performances at the Met<\/em>. He won outstanding individual achievement in any area of the performing arts \u2013 audio (1983) and outstanding individual achievement in the performing arts \u2013 audio (1984).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBorn in New York City, Saks grew up in The Bronx. His older sister was the cellist Toby Saks.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDuring the 1960\u2019s, Saks played bass guitar with The Balloon Farm, which had a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1968 with the psychedelic pop\/rock song \u201cA Question of Temperature.\u201d Saks wasn\u2019t the only member of The Balloon Farm who went on to success in the industry. Fellow member Mike Appel managed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/bruce-springsteen-the-e-street-band\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/bruce-springsteen-the-e-street-band\/\">Bruce Springsteen<\/a> from 1972-75 and co-produced his first three albums. Their sole hit was produced by Peter Schekeryk, who went on to produce hits for his wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/melanie\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/melanie\/\">Melanie<\/a>, including the Hot 100-topping \u201cBrand New Key.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Balloon Farm \"A Question Of Temperature\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hl_2DC5u_dk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\tSaks studied at the Juilliard School, and later continued his studies at the Mannes College of Music, from which he graduated in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs an audio producer for CBS Masterworks, RCA Red Seal (RCA Records), Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG), and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Saks was responsible for engineering and master recording hundreds of titles.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDP1GlWv_Tq\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\tBeginning in 1980, Saks worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City to record and produce more than 1,600 of its telecasts, radio broadcasts and live HD transmissions.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSaks was nominated for 53 Grammys between 1977 and 2018. He received at least one Grammy nomination in 30 different years.
