The new version, spliced together from the three previous official versions, caused controversy, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2024\/nov\/18\/ed-sheeran-i-wish-i-wasnt-on-40th-anniversary-version-of-band-aid-do-they-know-its-christmas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ed Sheeran and others<\/a> condemning it for perpetuating stereotypes about the plight of Africans. In recent years the retailer has commissioned Christmas songs which it hosts exclusively on its Amazon Music service. With many listeners telling Alexa devices to \u201cplay Christmas songs\u201d, Amazon\u2019s own tracks are prioritised on its playlists, ensuring a rise up the charts. Smooth jazz singer Laufey is at No 19 with Christmas Magic, another Amazon-affiliated track.<\/p>\n<p>Of the songs in this week\u2019s Top 40, 29 are Christmas-themed, with Brenda Lee, Bobby Helms and the Pogues all reaching the Top 10 with their respective classics. One of the outliers is UK singer-songwriter Lola Young, who scores her first Top 10 hit with Messy reaching No 7, a slow burn success following its initial release in May.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"97c76e57-0572-4db2-ae9a-e7ce4ac28dc0\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.VideoYoutubeBlockElement\">\n<div data-component=\"youtube-embed\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/mQrvmY5s2mo?wmode=opaque&#038;feature=oembed\" title=\"Freezing This Christmas OFFICIAL VIDEO by Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers (Parody of Mud)\" height=\"480\" width=\"854\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It may not have been streamed in anything close to the numbers enjoyed by Christmas classics, but the week\u2019s biggest-selling song is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mQrvmY5s2mo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Freezing This Christmas by Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers<\/a>, which is at No 37. Created by freelance writer Chris Middleton and sung by Rat Pack covers artist Dean Ager, the song is a satirical cover version of Mud\u2019s Lonely This Christmas which criticises Keir Starmer over Labour\u2019s decision to end winter fuel payments for pensioners not on lower incomes.
