As someone who used to do this and as a result ended up with multiple eye infections, I can attest that it&#8217;s a <a target=\"_self\" data-id=\"68bc9aed-9070-4f19-b04a-63c41014be91\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/health\/personal-care\/13-mistakes-to-avoid-with-your-contact-lenses\/\">contact lens habit worth breaking<\/a>. When I switched to using daily contacts and interchangeably using glasses, I drastically reduced my chances of developing an eye infection and kept my eyes healthier. <\/p>\n<p>Changing to dailies is worth considering: One study found that people who wear <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"1dfedf8f-c990-44ce-99a4-fafae19175c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaojournal.org\/article\/S0161-6420(22)00594-2\/fulltext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">reusable contact lenses are about four times more at risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis<\/a>, a rare eye infection that can increase your risk of vision loss or blindness, compared with folks who use daily contacts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" data-id=\"b6ed0a79-d915-41de-ad18-a0268d7658f8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/health\/personal-care\/13-mistakes-to-avoid-with-your-contact-lenses\/\">Other habits you should break with your contact lenses<\/a> include sleeping, showering or swimming with them on. Sward recommends wearing proper UV protection when outdoors or in a car, even if it&#8217;s overcast. &#8220;That is because harmful UVA and UVB rays in the atmosphere can increase the risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, skin cancer of the eyelid and other diseases of the eye,&#8221; she explains. To protect your eyes, Sward advises opting for sunglasses with 100% UV protection every time you step outside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cumulative UV exposure and damage only increases the lifetime incidence of macular degeneration, cataracts, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"20c0797b-a5d0-479e-9dca-afebc25c2c52\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/pinguecula-and-pterygium\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">pterygium<\/a> and skin cancer,&#8221; she explains. These conditions may be permanent or require surgical treatment to correct. Not wearing protective eyewear<\/h2>\n<p>You should also be wearing protective eyewear when playing sports or doing work that involves the risk of an eye injury. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention &#8220;estimates that about 2,000 people per day sustain work-related eye injuries, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that there are 30,000 sports related eye injuries every year in the United States,&#8221; Sward said. Many of these injuries are preventable and usually involve foreign objects that get stuck in the eye, like dust, wood, metal or plant debris. Smoking cigarettes doubles the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"340d3bcd-8de7-4053-b6b6-60e0c0f06f91\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/health-effects-tobacco-use\/how-smoking-can-contribute-vision-loss-and-blindness#:~:text=Smoking%20cigarettes%20can%20put%20you,the%20center%20of%20the%20eye.\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">risk of macular degeneration<\/a>, which can cause you to lose vision in the part of your eye known as the macula. Smoking also harms your retina and increases your chances of cataracts, which cloud your eye&#8217;s lenses and can also lead to loss of vision. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, smokers are about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"340d3bcd-8de7-4053-b6b6-60e0c0f06f91\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/health-effects-tobacco-use\/how-smoking-can-contribute-vision-loss-and-blindness#:~:text=Smoking%20cigarettes%20can%20put%20you,the%20center%20of%20the%20eye.\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">three times more likely to develop cataracts<\/a> and up to four times more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration compared with nonsmokers. So if you&#8217;re a smoker, it would be in your best interest to kick the habit.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1c873f68-f298-402e-89e3-cc8655029694\" data-ng-block=\"{\">6. Spending too much time on screens<\/h2>\n<p>We can all admit we could limit our time on our smartphones, laptops and tablets. Spending fewer hours with these items would also benefit our eyesight. Digital eye strain or <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"ab7b4338-b94d-4851-8d41-cfb603980984\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aoa.org\/AOA\/Documents\/Healthy%20Eyes\/Digital_eyestrain.pdf\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Computer Vision Syndrome, is a condition that occurs when you&#8217;ve been staring at a computer<\/a> or phone screen for too long.
