instruments for more than three decades, creations that dazzle for their unique materials as much as their sound.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article fashioned from pitch forks, a shovel, and a rake.<\/p>\n<p>His personal favourites? The electric bass guitar is on sale for $8,000, and the cello for $6,500.<\/p>\n<p>Collie said he needs the funds to upgrade his older model electric car to one with better range and speed, so he can see his large family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to and I do quite a bit of travelling. My wife has passed on and I\u2019m alone. I\u2019ve got 25 great grandchildren and they\u2019re all in Alberta and B.C.,\u201d Collie said. \u201cI\u2019ve got lots of reasons to drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collie said he first put the antler instruments up for sale this summer, but while there were a few inquiries from Vancouver \u201cnobody came out to see them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div aria-labelledby=\"SaskatoonStarPhoenixAfternoonHeadlines8048535912784856399526499744481280\" data-account-id=\"b9d3df2fccd108b5eff3c44f573b2cd6\" data-aqa=\"widget-newsletter\" data-newsletter=\"single\" data-newsletter-component data-target-list=\"SP_HeadlineNews\" data-widget=\"newsletter\">\n<p>By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really have to see them to appreciate them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Collie\u2019s instrument building began with a near-death experience that forced him to retire from his trade as a machinist.<\/p>\n<p data-async>He said he was \u201cworking tremendous, long hours at a high stress\u201d job in the late 1980s, when he <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"collapsed with a brain aneurysm\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/news\/local-news\/young-innovators-u-of-s-imaging-technique-advancing-stroke-treatment\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/news\/local-news\/young-innovators-u-of-s-imaging-technique-advancing-stroke-treatment\">collapsed with a brain aneurysm<\/a> that put him in a coma for more than a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was supposed to have killed me,\u201d he said. \u201cThey wrote me off as dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collie said he woke up with a clear head, and after a friend challenged him to \u201cput strings on a shovel,\u201d he began making instruments from other odd, kitschy implements.<\/p>\n<p>He said he walked into his workshop one day, saw a broken guitar on a workbench and a moose antler on another and \u201cgot the idea of putting them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends on a nearby First Nations reserve and a brother-in-law who maintains a trapline found the antlers and gave them to him.<\/p>\n<p>The first antler instrument, a guitar, \u201cturned out very, very good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-async>The antler doesn\u2019t warp and it\u2019s very strong, Collie said, adding that <a data-evt-val=\"{\"control_fields\": {\"mparticle\": {\"keys\": {\"click_source_type\": \"click_source_type\", \"anchor_text\": \"anchor_text\", \"target_url\": \"target_url\", \"layout_section\": \"layout_section\"}, \"mp_event_type\": \"Navigation\", \"extra_keys\": [\"click_vertical_position_percentage\", \"click_vertical_position_pixels\"]}}, \"click_source_type\": \"in-page link\", \"anchor_text\": \"heu2019s had success with most materials\", \"target_url\": \"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/video\/05b4a446-1ca2-4e13-aadb-0e9e63615e41\/improvised-instruments\", \"layout_section\": \"in-page-link\"}\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/video\/05b4a446-1ca2-4e13-aadb-0e9e63615e41\/improvised-instruments\">he\u2019s had success with most materials<\/a>, other than an ill-fated attempt at making a lap steel guitar from a snowshoe.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>The moose antler bass guitar weighs nearly eight kilograms, he said, but it\u2019s \u201cone of the most comfortable\u201d instruments he\u2019s made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it sounds good, just like a good solid-body electric guitar,\u201d Collie said.<\/p>\n<p>Collie isn\u2019t done yet with his unique instruments.
