With a career spanning decades, the band has navigated highs and lows, including a remarkable comeback that redefined their legacy. In 2025, they\u2019re set to return to Australian shores alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spotlightreport.net\/tag\/Alexisonfire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexisonfire<\/a> for what promises to be an unforgettable tour. Spotlight Report had the chance to catch up with Spencer and Aaron to chat about the upcoming shows, their incredible journey, and\u2014unexpectedly\u2014tacos.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: I just wanted to start off by saying the first time I saw you guys play was back in \u2013 I think \u2013 2009 at Soundwave in Sydney and I still remember how excited I was to see you guys! So it\u2019s really nice to meet you today!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Soundwave was fun.<\/p>\n<p>SC: I loved that festival.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah, that was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>SC: Until late \u2026 until it went downhill.<\/p>\n<p>AG: It was great until it was bad, yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>SR: [Laughs] It was great for the fans.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: We never really saw any of those issues. But speaking of tours, that\u2019s why we\u2019re talking today. It\u2019s been a little while since you played down here. I think it was 2019.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: I think so.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: It\u2019s really exciting that you\u2019re coming back after five years. Are you looking forward to coming back and playing down here?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SC: Yeah. I mean, I feel like Australia was one of the first places outside of North America to really give a shit about <strong>Underoath<\/strong>, you know? We\u2019ve always had really, really good experiences there, and I expect nothing different other than more excitement. I think it\u2019s gonna be awesome.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Yeah. I mean, you guys are definitely loved down here and I know that your shows are usually pretty crazy and everyone really gets into them and yeah, I think it\u2019s pretty safe to say that Australia is excited to have you back.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: We\u2019re stoked to be back. Like you said, we\u2019ve always been really embraced down there. And it\u2019s been <em>five<\/em> years, like you said, so we\u2019re really excited to get down there and see what it\u2019s like <em>post-pandy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: I think it\u2019s probably a little bit crazier now because everyone\u2019s still just so happy to be able to see live music again.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Sure, yeah. Yeah, yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: So, on this tour you are playing, <em>They\u2019re Only Chasing Safety<\/em> in full. Firstly, I just wanted to say that\u2019s <em>so<\/em> exciting because it\u2019s a record that a lot of us grew up alongside. And secondly, I just have to say, <em>wow<\/em>, how has it been in <em>twenty<\/em> years already?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: I <em>know<\/em>. We\u2019ve been doing in some form or another, shows of <em>They\u2019re Only Chasing Safety<\/em> all year long and it definitely reminds you of how old you are so \u2026 Yeah, we\u2019re all in our forties now. We feel the twenty years. How does it feel to be playing it so many years later?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SC: Well, we\u2019ve always \u2026 we\u2019ve never not played songs off with it since it came out. I mean, we play songs off of every record. Always. You know, even on the next tour that we do, we\u2019ll still be playing songs off <em>Chasing Safety<\/em>, just like, we\u2019re doing songs off <em>Define<\/em> and <em>Lost<\/em> \u2013 some songs \u2013 on the tour as well.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Like, I think we\u2019re pretty aware that <em>Chasing Safety<\/em> is our first real shot at being \u201cpopular\u201d or whatever you wanna call it so we know that we\u2019ll always play those songs, but playing them <em>all<\/em> is cool. I think we\u2019re probably a bit burnt out on it right now; we\u2019re on show fifty of a fifty-seven show North American tour.<\/p>\n<p>So, we\u2019re actually in Richmond, Virginia tonight on tour. That\u2019s why we\u2019re on the same computer. But by the time we get down there we will. Be ready and raring to go. I just think we\u2019ve been doing it now for three months straight, so we\u2019re all just like, you know, \u201ceh, <em>Chasing Safety <\/em>again\u201d, but no, we\u2019re very blessed and lucky that people responded to the album the way they did and that it put us here, so yeah.<\/p>\n<p>SC: And we do it for you guys, you know. If we connect to it anymore or not or we care or not, it doesn\u2019t matter. It\u2019s a celebration, you know, this is where it started and we\u2019re starting to affect people and we get up there and we do it for you guys and it\u2019s <em>fun<\/em>. It\u2019s like we kind of <em>all<\/em> do it together, you know once we\u2019re on the stage. It feels like we\u2019re all doing it as a unit, which is a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Good! I am sorry to hear you\u2019re getting a bit burnt out at the moment though!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Oh <em>no<\/em>, it\u2019s I think it\u2019s just because we\u2019ve been on this tour for, like I said this is show fifty tonight.<\/p>\n<p>SC: And also, no one gets a whole lot from playing the record you wrote when you were like children.<\/p>\n<p>You know, for us, we\u2019re obviously gonna like playing newer stuff more because we feel like it\u2019s us more intelligent, more developed, more mature.<\/p>\n<p>AG: It\u2019s like you said though, it\u2019s electric when you get up there and everyone in the room is there for that. And they expect that. It\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Yeah. It\u2019s the nostalgia of going back because for us, we\u2019re in a different place mentally as well so it\u2019s kind of good to go back and see how far we\u2019ve come.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SC: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah. I\u2019ve never heard anybody put it that way, but you\u2019re right, yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Yeah, that\u2019s what I love about listening to old songs that I loved. It\u2019s like you [probably] can\u2019t even remember where you were when you heard them, or in your case when you wrote them.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: But you can also see how far you\u2019ve come from those days.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Is there a song that you\u2019re especially looking forward to playing from that record down here, one that you don\u2019t typically play on a on a normal tour?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SC: I don\u2019t think so. I mean, like we said, we\u2019re just celebrating it and where it all started for a lot of people. And there\u2019s not one song we particularly like \u201coh, I can\u2019t wait to play that\u201d. I mean, these songs have been around for twenty, twenty-one years, you know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SR: <em>Yeah<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AG: 22 by the time we\u2019re down there, yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Thanks for making me feel so old again.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah. You\u2019re welcome! I\u2019m older.<\/p>\n<p>SR: So you are playing some other songs as well as an encore.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah, <em>Chasing Safety<\/em>\u2019s not long enough to make like a whole show out of. So we\u2019re playing like \u2026 on the North American version we\u2019ve been playing six additional songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>SR: Okay, cool.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AG: I don\u2019t have any clue as far as down there.<\/p>\n<p>SC: I think we\u2019re doing something similar when we get down there.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Yeah, but because it\u2019s not our tour down there \u2026 It\u2019s <strong>Alexisonfire<\/strong>\u2019s tour, so I don\u2019t know how much time will have.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>SR: Ah, yeah.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SC: It says <em>Chasing Safety <\/em>and encore set. I think it\u2019s the same exact thing.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Maybe, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>SC: We\u2019ll find out!<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: Well, I\u2019m excited to hear whatever it is that you guys end up playing and I was actually going to say I really hope that your new song makes that set list because I\u2019m really excited to hear that live.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AG: We\u2019ve been playing it here.<\/p>\n<p>SC: It will.<\/p>\n<p>AG: I think it\u2019ll make it.<\/p>\n<p>SC: I think, if we\u2019re going to a country across the world, we gotta play a new song, right? [Laughs]. Gotta let \u2018em know what\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n<p>AG: For sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>SR: I really <em>do<\/em> love the new single. It\u2019s literally just dropped in case anyone hasn\u2019t heard it yet.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AG: Oh yeah.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>SR: And it feels like a very appropriate song for the time. It\u2019s kind of about not running away from the apocalypse, right? And it definitely feels like we\u2019re heading towards the end of the world at the moment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SC: Yeah, Yeah, it it\u2019s whatever you make out of it. It\u2019s a fun, <em>fun<\/em> song to play. Everyone seems to be \u2013 in America \u2013 latching onto it pretty hard and participating which is exciting. We were playing it before it came out, and I would just teach them the chorus before we\u2019d play and it would get \u2026 I mean, you\u2019ve seen the clips online. You can hear how loud the people are. It\u2019s louder than any song we play all night, which is exciting and fun for us. We get to go up there and celebrate where this started for this band, really, and then we get to play something like that, which is like, this is where we\u2019re heading and people are reacting to it. It\u2019s a good feeling. For all of us. What do you do? You can\u2019t get a new job at sixty years old. We gotta keep going.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Rock wear \u2013 you know?<\/p>\n<p>SC: I guess so.<\/p>\n<p>SC: We can start our cooking \u2013<\/p>\n<p>AG: Taco truck.<\/p>\n<p>SC: Our tacos. We\u2019ll do tacos.<\/p>\n<p>AG: Tacos and rock!<\/p>\n<p>SC: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>SR: [Laughs]. That sounds like a great adventure. It\u2019s been really great just seeing the New year of you guys and seeing, like I\u2019ve said before, where you came from and where you are now and celebrating that journey.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SC: Yeah, we\u2019re very, very importunate that we\u2019re able to do what we still do and we got through a lot of the growing pains of our twenties and early thirties and were able to pick the pieces up and get the band going again because there was one point we didn\u2019t think that would ever happen again. So we\u2019re definitely happy to be here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SR: I remember when you guys made you come back and I just remember everyone was so thrilled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AG: Oh, hell yeah. We\u2019re very happy to be here.
