YouTube announced<\/a> a number of updates<\/a> for its mobile app in October, and the translucent bottom bar with a frosted glass effect is now rolling out.<\/p>\n

The bottom bar, which was updated last month with tweaked icons<\/a>, is now translucent. You can see what\u2019s underneath (thumbnails) as you scroll the app.<\/p>\n

This frosted glass effect is subtle and \u2014 to my eye \u2014 more apparent when YouTube\u2019s dark theme is enabled. Since the iPhone has a taller gesture area, this change is more noticeable on iOS compared to Android (unless 3-button navigation is enabled).\u00a0Overall, it\u2019s meant to offer a more immersive\u00a0browsing experience.<\/p>\n

Old vs. new<\/em><\/p>\n

YouTube\u2019s translucent bottom bar is rolling out as a server-side update with version 19.47 (Android<\/a>) and 19.49 (iOS<\/a>) today. On desktop web<\/a>, the top bar is getting the blurred effect.<\/p>\n

This change joins other mobile design updates like the miniplayer revamp<\/a>, reorganized Settings page, and new playback speed controls<\/a>.<\/p>\n
