When the <em>Oppenheimer <\/em>Oscar winner asked about the decades since Scott\u2019s Best Picture winner, Scott credited streaming services with keeping <em>Gladiator <\/em>viable for a sequel 24 years later.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThank God for all the platforms,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI can press a button and see the first film I did 40 years ago. I watched <em>The Duelists<\/em> tonight. Thanks to the platform, the film evolves a life of its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHard to believe it\u2019s going on a half-century since 1977\u2019s <em>The Duelists. <\/em>Streaming also led Scott to his new lead actor. He said he saw Paul Mescal, who plays the long-lost son of Queen Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), in the Hulu series <em>Normal People<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div data-pmc-adm-ad-id=\"1236099936\">\n<h3>\n\t\t\tWatch on Deadline\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI need a bedtime story, so I\u2019ll probably go back and watch a movie,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI tend to watch incomers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/feature\/gladiator-streaming-where-to-watch-1236178230\/\">Where To Watch \u2018Gladiator\u2019: Is Ridley Scott\u2019s 2000 Film Streaming?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tScott invited his <em>American Gangster <\/em>star, Denzel Washington, into the <em>Gladiator <\/em>world. As Macrinus, Washington gives a flamboyant, Machiavellian performance. Scott said Washington was reacting to the grand scale of the Ancient Rome sets.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cDenzel, funny enough was amazed by the scale of things,\u201d Scott said. \u201cDenzel was actually nervous. From that came something great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLike the original <em>Gladiator<\/em>, that scale came from sets built on location in Matla and Morocco. When 20th Century Fox built Jerusalem for 2005\u2019s <em>Kingdom of Heaven<\/em>, Scott sold the set to the government rather than tearing it down.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cOn this <em>Gladiator<\/em>, I had to rent my own set for a million dollars,\u201d Scott said. \u201cSo they got the last laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tScott\u2019s films have been building practical sets throughout his career. He referenced his Christopher Columbus epic <em>1492: Conquest of Paradise<\/em>, for which they built Columbus\u2019 three ships and sailed them across the Atlantic Ocean. Scott joked that he would argue with star Gerard Depardieu over his English pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s a big guy, you can\u2019t argue with him,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI said, \u2018The world.\u2019 He said, \u2018No, no, the vorld.\u2019 \u2018No, the world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/11\/gladiator-ii-review-paul-mescal-denzel-washington-ridley-scotts-long-awaited-sequel-best-picture-oscar-winner-1236172181\/\">\u2018Gladiator II\u2019 Review: Paul Mescal &#038; Denzel Washington Power Ridley Scott\u2019s Long Awaited Sequel To His Only Best Picture Oscar Winner<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tNolan inquired how Scott approaches world building in a film like <em>Gladiator II<\/em>. Scott broke it down as a matter of departments.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re running a corporation that\u2019s 1,200 personnel, 40 HODs [heads of department],\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs the CEO of <em>Gladiator II <\/em>Corp., Scott goes page by page through the script asking if any department has a problem. When they do, it\u2019s usually because they haven\u2019t spoken to the other departments.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe key is people must talk to each other,\u201d Scott said. \u201cThey try and keep it to themselves and fix the problem. He said he would check in with editing and sound mixing on weekends during the shoot.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI leave them to it,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI separate. That becomes very efficient, which enables me to move on to the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNolan also was interested in Scott\u2019s use of up to 11 cameras simultaneously. Since Scott is known for his visuals in such films as <em>Alien <\/em>and <em>Blade Runner<\/em>, Nolan wondered how he could maintain a unified vision.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tScott said he drew on his experience directing live television at BBC. With cameras feeding into a video monitor, he can essentially edit in his head by picking each shot as the scene plays. He also takes advantage of lighting from different angles. For <em>Alien, <\/em>he relied on his focus puller, the late Adrian Biddle, whom he promoted to cinematographer of <em>Thelma &#038; Louise <\/em>and <em>1492, <\/em>to hit the walls of the Nostromo before Scott did.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt was all handheld because the corridors were so narrow,\u201d Scott said. \u201cAdrian became my cushion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt isn\u2019t just shooting speed that has increased Scott\u2019s output, though he said he shot <em>Gladiator II <\/em>in 51 days. But later in his career, Scott learned not to try to develop too many projects.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWhen you begin, you want 40 things in development and that\u2019s not smart,\u201d Scott said. \u201cIf you can, as you go wiser, you have maybe two or three in development you\u2019re really going to make. Otherwise you spin a lot of wheels and waste a lot of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNolan did give Scott one direction.
