Phil Collins provided a rare health update after losing his ability to play the drums almost three years ago.<\/p>\n
After a 50-year career, the ailing Genesis musician retired in March 2022.<\/p>\n
Seven months later, he spoke about his line of work and the struggles that accompany it in the documentary \u201cPhil Collins: Drummer First,\u201d<\/a> which debuted Wednesday on YouTube.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s still kind of sinking in a bit\u2026\u201d Collins, 73, admitted in one of his interviews, per People<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.\u201d<\/p>\n Having picked up his first set of drumsticks at 5 years old, the laborious activity \u201chas taken its toll on [his] hands, legs.\u201d<\/p>\n Collins explained of his retirement, \u201cIf I can\u2019t do what I did as well as I did it, I\u2019d rather relax and not do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks then I\u2019ll have a crack at it,\u201d he shared. \u201cBut I just feel like I\u2019ve used up my air miles.\u201d<\/p>\n The Grammy winner\u2019s son and drumming successor, Nic Collins \u2014 who was also interviewed for the documentary \u2014 pointed out that \u201cmusicians, people in bands in general, had this thought that they were invincible.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with Page Six Daily.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s really what it is with my dad \u2014 is just this kind of sense of \u2018you\u2019re a drummer, you\u2019re invincible, you do what you do,’\u201d the 23-year-old said. \u201cBut you don\u2019t know it\u2019s gonna take a toll in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n Nic noted that his father underwent a \u201cbig surgery on his neck [in 2015] that stemmed from all those years playing drums and bad posture.\u201d<\/p>\n Phil also suffers from drop foot<\/a>, a condition that makes it difficult to lift the front part of one\u2019s foot, making drumming nearly impossible. He now must use a cane to walk.<\/p>\n Six months before putting the drumsticks down for good, the \u201cIn the Air Tonight\u201d singer lamented that his stamina was declining.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating \u2019cause, you know, I\u2019d love to be playing up there with my son,\u201d he explained on \u201cBBC Breakfast\u201d<\/a>\u00a0alongside his Genesis bandmates in September 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cI can barely hold a stick with this hand, so there are certain physical things, which get in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked whether their reunion tour, \u201cThe Last Domino?\u201d Tour<\/a>, was putting the group \u201cto bed,\u201d Phil replied, \u201cWe\u2019re all men of our age, and I think \u2014 to some extent \u2014 yeah, it probably is putting it to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cJust generally, for me, I don\u2019t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n![\"music](\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/phil-collins-gives-rare-health-95618316.jpg\")
