{"id":814113,"date":"2024-12-23T01:21:04","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T07:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/23\/new-mothers-urgently-need-more-mental-health-supports\/"},"modified":"2024-12-23T01:21:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T07:21:04","slug":"new-mothers-urgently-need-more-mental-health-supports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/23\/new-mothers-urgently-need-more-mental-health-supports\/","title":{"rendered":"New mothers urgently need more mental health supports"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-content\" class>\n<p><strong>A new study has found that new mothers are in urgent new of more mental health supports in the first two years of their child&#8217;s life.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ireland&#8217;s health service requires more resources and funding in order to properly support new mothers facing increased anxiety following the birth of their child.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the\u00a0<em>Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine<\/em> surveyed a number of new mothers on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/podcasts\/highlights-from-the-hard-shoulder\/how-to-talk-to-your-friends-about-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>mental health experiences<\/strong><\/a> and found that women want more support in the postpartum period.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/newstalk-breakfast-234855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Newstalk<\/em> <em>Breakfast<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> University College Cork&#8217;s senior lecturer in public health <span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Dr <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span>Karen Matvienko-Sikar outlined some of the study&#8217;s findings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span>They get lots of support when <\/span><span>they\u2019re<\/span><span> pregnant and then that <\/span><span>kind<\/span><span>\u00a0of <\/span><span>peters<\/span><span> out once <\/span><span>they\u2019ve<\/span><span> had the baby,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Services<\/h2>\n<p>The study found that while many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/podcasts\/highlights-from-lunchtime-live\/lack-of-support-for-breastfeeding-mothers-in-ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>new mothers<\/strong><\/a> take a proactive approach to self-care, there seems to be a need for more publicly available services catering to postpartum mental health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;T<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span>hey do feel like there needs to be more infrastructure, more <\/span><span>resources<\/span><span> and more support to <\/span><span>actually help<\/span><span> them within the healthc<\/span><span>are setting<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span>,&#8221; Dr Sikar said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">The study also found that an overload of information about caring for infants is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/podcasts\/highlights-from-newstalk-breakfast\/why-new-mothers-need-increased-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>increasing anxiety<\/strong><\/a> among some new mothers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;T<span>here is so much information out there that<\/span><span> new mums find it very difficult to parse out what\u2019s the &#8216;real&#8217; information that they should be taking in,&#8221; Dr Sikar said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s this<span>\u00a0mass of information that women find difficult.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some mothers are even given conflicting information &#8211; which adds to the stress.<\/p>\n<h2>Shame<\/h2>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">Dr Sikar said that many women experiencing mental health difficulties worry that they might face consequences if they disclose their concerns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;W<span>omen often feel a sense of shame if they <\/span><span>aren\u2019t<\/span><span> &#8216;managing&#8217;,&#8221; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;They often have <\/span><span>a fear of disclosing &#8211; there is a fear of what it might mean for them or their baby.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Sikar said healthcare professionals &#8220;do an excellent job&#8221; of supporting mothers in the postpartum period &#8211; but she said more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.radiocms.net\/uploads\/2024\/12\/02154714\/2FMKJA5.jpg\" alt width=\"1920\" height=\"1282\"> A mother holds her baby on a park bench, Alamy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There needs to be more capacity <span>put<\/span><span> into those perinatal mental health services to ensure we\u2019re reaching everybody &#8211; not just women who are at the more extreme end of psychological difficulties,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We know that<\/span><span> public health nurses, midwives and GPs are providing a lot of this support &#8211;
