An uneven merger landscape had a ripple effect on several players, and a sector-wide shift towards the premium end of the market left budget carriers scrambling to <span><a data-ga=\"[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/qz.com\/spirit-southwest-budget-carriers-new-tactics-1851614931\",{\"metric25\":1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/spirit-southwest-budget-carriers-new-tactics-1851614931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rethink their business models<\/a><\/span>. This challenge came to a head when Elliott Investment Management <span><a data-ga=\"[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/qz.com\/southwest-airlines-stock-elliott-investment-activist-1851529294\",{\"metric25\":1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/southwest-airlines-stock-elliott-investment-activist-1851529294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took a major stake<\/a><\/span> and pushed the company to make significant changes. In fact, Spirit sought to <span><a data-ga=\"[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/qz.com\/spirit-frontier-airlines-merger-stock-save-deal-1851679076\",{\"metric25\":1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/spirit-frontier-airlines-merger-stock-save-deal-1851679076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rekindle long-dormant merger talks<\/a><\/span> with Frontier just before it declared bankruptcy.
