{"id":813072,"date":"2024-12-18T23:16:28","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T05:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/18\/fbi-arrests-hacker-behind-sec-fake-bitcoin-etf-approval\/"},"modified":"2024-12-18T23:16:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T05:16:28","slug":"fbi-arrests-hacker-behind-sec-fake-bitcoin-etf-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/18\/fbi-arrests-hacker-behind-sec-fake-bitcoin-etf-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI arrests hacker behind SEC fake Bitcoin ETF approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoins <\/p>\n<div data-v-93e1f8b6>\n<p>A 25-year-old man from Athens, Alabama was arrested by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for hacking the Securities and Exchange Commission\u2019s official X account in January.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/pr\/fbi-arrests-alabama-man-january-2024-sec-x-hack-spiked-value-bitcoin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/pr\/fbi-arrests-alabama-man-january-2024-sec-x-hack-spiked-value-bitcoin\">According<\/a> to an Oct. 17 statement, Eric Council Jr. was taken into custody following charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft and access device fraud. <\/p>\n<p>According to federal authorities, Council Jr. is accused of being part of a group that <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-blames-sim-swap-attack-hacked-x-account-prior-official-bitcoin-etf-approval\" rel target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-blames-sim-swap-attack-hacked-x-account-prior-official-bitcoin-etf-approval\">hacked the SEC\u2019s X account<\/a> in January 2024 and posted a fake message on Jan. 9 claiming that the SEC had approved the first Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) of the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fake announcement caused Bitcoin\u2019s (<a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\" rel target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\">BTC<\/a>) price to spike by over $1,000 following the X post, leading to further shockwaves in markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 15 minutes later, SEC Chair Gary Gensler <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-account-hacked-no-spot-bitcoin-etf-approval\" rel target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-account-hacked-no-spot-bitcoin-etf-approval\">denied the news<\/a>, claiming the commission had \u201cnot approved the listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products,\u201d adding that the regulator\u2019s account had been compromised.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2024-10\/01929b36-ffbd-7b47-8249-75fff8ef7902\" title><figcaption>\n<p><em>Source: <\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GaryGensler\/status\/1744833049064288387\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GaryGensler\/status\/1744833049064288387\"><em>Gary Gensler<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The hacker gained control of the SEC account <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-blames-sim-swap-attack-hacked-x-account-prior-official-bitcoin-etf-approval\" rel target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-blames-sim-swap-attack-hacked-x-account-prior-official-bitcoin-etf-approval\">through a \u201cSIM swap\u201d attack<\/a> \u2014 when a hacker takes control of a victim\u2019s phone number by transferring it to their own SIM card to bypass two-factor authentication and gain access to the victim\u2019s accounts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese SIM swapping schemes, where fraudsters trick service providers into giving them control of unsuspecting victims\u2019 phones, can result in devastating financial losses to victims and leaks of sensitive personal and private information,\u201d said US Attorney Matthew Graves. He continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHere, the conspirators allegedly used their illegal access to a phone to manipulate financial markets. Through indictments like this, we will hold accountable those who commit these serious crimes.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the indictment, Council Jr., who went by online aliases such as \u201cRonin,\u201d \u201cEasymunny\u201d and \u201cAGiantSchnauzer,\u201d obtained personal information and an ID template with a victim\u2019s details from his scheming partners. He then produced a fake ID with his own card printer and used the fake ID to acquire a SIM card linked to the victim\u2019s phone at a cell provider store in Huntsville, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>After purchasing an iPhone with cash, he used the phone and SIM card to retrieve access codes for the SEC\u2019s X account. He passed these codes to his co-conspirators, who used the codes to post a fraudulent X post about the ETFs\u2019 approval. In return, Council Jr. received a payment in Bitcoin. Soon after, he drove to Birmingham to return the iPhone for cash.<\/p>\n<p>As per the FBI probe, the hacker later conducted internet searches for \u201cSECGOV hack,\u201d \u201cTelegram sim swap,\u201d \u201chow can I know for sure if I am being investigated by the FBI,\u201d and \u201cWhat are the signs that you are under investigation by law enforcement or the FBI even if you have not been contacted by them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Council Jr. is accused of unlawfully gaining access to the SEC\u2019s X account by using the stolen identity of an authorized individual to take control of their phone number. According to principal deputy assistant attorney general Nicole M. Argentieri: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCouncil, Jr.\u2019s co-conspirators then allegedly used this unauthorized access to the X account to falsely announce that the SEC had approved listing Bitcoin ETFs, which caused the price of Bitcoin to rise by $1,000 and then fall by $2,000.\u00a0Council\u2019s indictment underscores the Criminal Division\u2019s commitment to countering cybercrime, especially when it threatens the integrity of financial markets.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just a day following the dramatic incident, the SEC<a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-spot-bitcoin-etf-approvals\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\"> approved the debut of 11 Bitcoin ETFs on Wall Street<\/a>.
