Becky Sauerbrunn has called time on her career, stepping away from both the Portland Thorns and the United States.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old has played in every season of the National Women\u2019s Soccer League to date and earned 219 international caps.<\/p>\n

But she announced on Tuesday she was quitting the sport, having won three NWSL championships, two World Cups and an Olympic gold medal.<\/p>\n

Sauerbrunn said of her USWNT career: \u201cI learned early on that we were all just renting our jerseys.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat I got to wear the US Soccer crest once was an honour and privilege for which I\u2019m forever grateful. The fact that I got to do it over 200 times is truly humbling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI competed with and learned from some of the greatest players and leaders this sport has ever seen, and I consider myself beyond lucky to have been able to play a small part in this programme\u2019s storied history.\u201d<\/p>\n
