{"id":812366,"date":"2024-12-16T22:21:52","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T04:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/16\/google-microsoft-and-tiktok-lead-n2-55-trillion-tax-contributions-in-nigeria\/"},"modified":"2024-12-16T22:21:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T04:21:52","slug":"google-microsoft-and-tiktok-lead-n2-55-trillion-tax-contributions-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/16\/google-microsoft-and-tiktok-lead-n2-55-trillion-tax-contributions-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Google, Microsoft, and TikTok Lead N2.55 Trillion Tax Contributions in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The National Information Technology Development Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/nitda.gov.ng\/\">NITDA<\/a>) has announced that foreign digital companies like Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and others paid N2.55 trillion (about $1.5 billion) in taxes in the first half of 2024. <\/p>\n<p>This information was shared in a statement by NITDA\u2019s spokesperson, Mrs. Hadiza Umar, using data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).<\/p>\n<p>NITDA praised companies such as Google, Microsoft, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok for following the <strong>Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms\/Internet Intermediaries<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>This Code sets rules to promote online <a href=\"https:\/\/businesselitesafrica.com\/6-most-controversial-pastors-in-nigeria\/?v=66e10e9ff65e\">safety<\/a> and manage harmful content.<\/p>\n<p>The agency highlighted that the tax payments from these companies show how government regulations are helping both safety and revenue growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis increase in tax revenue shows the importance of strong rules that encourage companies to follow the law and support the digital economy,\u201d NITDA said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-companies-are-handling-content\"><strong>How Companies Are Handling Content<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>NITDA also gave an update on how digital companies are managing harmful content and keeping users safe. In 2023, these companies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Handled over 4.1 million user complaints.<\/li>\n<li>Removed 65.8 million harmful posts.<\/li>\n<li>Restored 379,433 posts after appeals by users.<\/li>\n<li>Closed or deactivated 12.09 million accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While progress is being made, NITDA said more work is needed to make the internet safer and more responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The Code of Practice, introduced in June 2022, sets rules for social media platforms and online blogs to ensure they act responsibly.
