Clark — amid an up-and-down beginning to her rookie season on the Indiana Fever — was left off the 12-woman roster, a decision that instantly became a national controversy.

Critics railed USA Basketball for keeping her off the team, citing her growing popularity as reason why she should have been on the Paris Olympics roster.

Rather than Clark, the roster included guards with more veteran guards like Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, Diana Taurasi, Sabrina Ionescu, and Kahleah Copper. At 26 years old, Ionescu marked the youngest player on the roster.

<picture data-cid="site/picture_element-1733973588_4768_54479" data-cdata="{"asset_id":25784101,"ratio":"*"}">

</picture>

        Photo by Tim Clayton/Corbis via Getty Images

In a Time interview with Sean Gregory, Clark admitted her initial disappointment from being left off the USA basketball roster — but made clear she rejected the notion she should have been named to the team due to her popularity.

When the rosters were finalized, the Fever boasted a 3-9 record, and Clark was in the midst of an inconsistent start to the season, a stretch that was marred by several high-turnover games and spotty shooting performances.

“I gave them a lot of reasons to keep me off the team with my play,” she said.

She also recognized the depth of talent on the USA Basketball roster.

“A point everybody was making was like, ‘Who are you taking off the team?’” Clark said. “And that was a tremendous point.”

Many media personalities insisted that leaving Clark off the roster was a mistake due to marketing reason — pointing to the visibility and attention she would inveitably bring with her to Paris.

ESPN’s Stephen A Smith and <a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Fsports%2Fcolumnist%2Fbrennan%2F2024%2F08%2F09%2Fparis-olympics-womens-basketball-caitlin-clark-attention%2F74734712007%2F&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sbnation.com%2Fwnba%2F2024%2F12%2F10%2F24317918%2Fcaitlin-clark-usa-olympic-basketball-team-wnba-indiana-fever-christine-brennan-stephan-a-smith" rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" target="_blank" has-subtag="true" data-cdata="{"rewritten_url":"https://go.redirectingat.com?xcust=___sb__p_24081959__m_m-placeholder__s_s-placeholder__t_w__c_c-placeholder__r_r-placeholder__d_d-placeholderu0026id=66960X1516590u0026xs=1u0026url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2024/08/09/paris-olympics-womens-basketball-caitlin-clark-attention/74734712007/u0026referrer=sbnation.comu0026sref=https://www.sbnation.com/wnba/2024/12/10/24317918/caitlin-clark-usa-olympic-basketball-team-wnba-indiana-fever-christine-brennan-stephan-a-smith","subtag_max_length":50,"subtag_delim_length":3,"subtag_key":"xcust","subtag_data":{"xcust":"___sb__p_24081959__m_m-placeholder__s_s-placeholder__t_w__c_c-placeholder__r_r-placeholder__d_d-placeholder","id":"66960X1516590","xs":"1","url":"https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2024/08/09/paris-olympics-womens-basketball-caitlin-clark-attention/74734712007/","referrer":"sbnation.com","sref":"https://www.sbnation.com/wnba/2024/12/10/24317918/caitlin-clark-usa-olympic-basketball-team-wnba-indiana-fever-christine-brennan-stephan-a-smith"},"encode_subtag":false}">USA Today’s Christine Brennan were two of the loudest voices that admonished USA Basketball for not putting Clark on the roster from a visibility standpoint — not because the team was missing her skillset.

Why leaving Caitlin Clark off the 2024 US Olympic women’s basketball team matters, a lot.
