Its 0.7 per cent margin in the latest accounts compares with 0.8 per cent the year before and 1.3 per cent in 2021\/22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Turnover growth was slower than the previous year, when<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/gratte-brothers-doubles-turnover-to-250m-08-01-2024\/\"> <span>it doubled<\/span><\/a><span>, propelling Gratte Brothers to 66th place in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/cn-intelligence\/data-dashboards\/cn100-turnover-profit-and-margin-23-08-2024\/\"> <span>CN100 2024 table of top contractors<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Profit was affected by a \u00a32.5m increase in provisions booked against contract losses. This rise was mainly connected with delays and cost inflation on an unnamed \u201csignificant and complex long-term project\u201d, group managing director David Gratte said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The year before, Gratte Brothers booked a \u00a312.1m provision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The firm\u2019s activities cover mechanical and electrical (M&#038;E) contracting, security systems and commercial catering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>M&#038;E accounted for the bulk of its 2023\/24 turnover, at \u00a3225.9m \u2013 up from \u00a3219.6m in the previous year, helped by continuing demand in the data-centre sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But while inflationary pressures have eased, Gratte noted that the construction industry \u201cstill faces significant cost pressures linked to [the] labour skills shortage and material supplies\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These pressures \u201care expected to increase further since the announcement of the recent Autumn Budget\u201d, he added in his strategic review accompanying the accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gratte Brothers\u2019 cash at hand increased from \u00a337.9m to \u00a339.7m in 2023\/24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The firm held no short-term or long-term repayable bank loans, and it paid out dividends worth \u00a3100,000 in the latest financial year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Its average monthly headcount rose from 445 to 484 employees.
