Abubakar Momoh, the former minister of Niger Delta
\ndevelopment, says the ministry\u2019s scrapping is to enhance regional development
\ncoordination.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the federal executive council (FEC) scrapped
\nthe ministry of Niger Delta and the ministry of sports development.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy,
\nsaid the council took the decision during its meeting presided over by
\nPresident Bola Tinubu in Abuja.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

A newly established regional development ministry will
\noversee all the regional development commissions.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The commissions include the Niger Delta Development
\nCommission (NDDC), North West Development Commission (NWDC), South West
\nDevelopment Commission (SWDC), and North East Development Commission (NEDC).<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Tinubu retained Momoh as the minister in charge of the
\nministry for regional development.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting,
\nMomoh assured that the adjustment was \u201cpurely administrative,\u201d which did not
\ndiminish the focus on Niger Delta development.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He said the restructuring was done to establish a
\ncentralised oversight system for the increasing regional development
\ncommissions nationwide.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cFor our people in the Niger Delta region, I would like them
\nto know that this has not removed anything from them,\u201d Momoh said.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is still very
\nmuch in place under the ministry of regional Development, and all other such
\nagencies remain intact.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cAll the structures and everything about the Niger Delta
\nremain. It\u2019s just a change of nomenclature and, of course, expansion of
\nactivities of the ministry.\u201d<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Momoh lauded Tinubu\u2019s vision behind the restructuring,
\ndescribing it as a \u201cforward-thinking move\u201d to enhance regional development
\ncoordination across the country.<\/o:p><\/p>\n
