B<\/abbr>illionaires are some of the most powerful people on Earth, wielding significant influence over huge parts of the global economy and playing key roles in everything from international politics and media to philanthropy and scientific innovation. Many have created companies that employ tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of employees around the world and are behind some of the best known brands, including Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, Google and Nike. The majority are self-made, meaning they started they created their fortunes themselves, rather than inheriting them. Others, like Bernard Arnault and Rupert Murdoch had a bit more of a leg up to start, joining family businesses, but expanded their fortunes greatly and went on to create empires in their respective industries.<\/p>\n

Many billionaires hold much of their net worth in the stock of the company they founded. As that stock price moves, their fortune moves along with it. On April 1, 2023, Mike Bloomberg, founder of financial information and news firm Bloomberg LP, ranked as the world\u2019s seventh richest person, per Forbes<\/em>. But stocks owned by Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, French cosmetics heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers (ranked Number 8, 9 and 10 last month) rose in value during April, lifting their fortunes above Bloomberg\u2019s, who is now ranked No. 10. The world\u2019s No. 1 richest, Bernard Arnault, is worth nearly $11 billion more than he was on April 1. For some near the top of Forbes\u2019 Real Time list of billionaires<\/a>, it\u2019s a monthly shuffle.<\/p>\n

Two years ago, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was the fifth richest person in the world, worth $97 billion. Since then, Facebook\u2019s (rebranded as Meta Platforms) stock took a dive Zuckerberg fell out of the top 10 richest. Even though Meta stock has rebounded\u2014including a big jump in late April<\/a> 2023 after it announced quarterly earnings, Zuckerberg is still not back in the top 10. As of May 1, 2023 he ranks No. 14, worth $85 billion\u2014up from nearly $76 billion a month ago.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Gautam Adani overtook Mukesh Ambani to become the richest person in Asia in February 2022. His fortune soared by $55 billion last year, and in late January he was the third richest person in the world, worth $127 billion. Then on January 24, short seller Hindenburg Research released a scathing report accusing Adani Group of running a \u201ccorporate con,\u201d which the billionaire and his companies vehemently denied. Shares of listed Adani Group firms have fallen sharply since then. Adani dropped out of the ranks of the 10 richest on February 1, 2023. As of May 1, he ranks No. 24, worth $50.2 billion. That\u2019s up from his April 1 rank of No. 26, worth nearly $44.3 billion.<\/p>\n

Musk, who became CEO of Tesla in 2008, took the company public in 2010. Its market capitalization soared during 2020 and 2021. In September 2021, Musk became the world\u2019s richest person. In November 2021, his fortune peaked at a whopping $320 billion.<\/p>\n

Musk remained the world\u2019s richest person until December 2022, when the drop in Tesla\u2019s share price pushed down the value of his fortune. Tesla shares have fallen from their peak in November 2021, but have risen nearly 50% from the beginning of 2023 through May 1, 2023.<\/p>\n

Bezos was the world\u2019s richest person on Forbes<\/em>\u2019 list of the World\u2019s Billionaires from 2018 through 2021; he dropped to second richest on the 2022 billionaires list. He dropped to fourth richest but moved back to No. 3 on January 25, 2023 as the fortune of India\u2019s Gautam Adani (formerly No. 3 richest) fell.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Bezos and his wife MacKenzie divorced; as part of the settlement, she got 4% of Amazon\u2019s shares and he kept 12%. He has since sold more of his stake and owns around 10% of the company. Since Amazon went public in 1997, Forbes<\/em> calculates that he has sold more than $27 billion worth of his stock.
