We send out emails. We go on her Facebook page, and it\u2019s never updated, Twitter and stuff like that. The gates to her store are always down,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>A man living above the councilwoman\u2019s headquarters said the office has been \u201cmostly closed\u201d since he moved there two years ago. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re open for a day or two days, and then they close for a whole week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/NYPICHPDPICT000005817527.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"26820570\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/NYPICHPDPICT000005817527.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Councilmember Tiffany Cab\u00e1n.\"  ><\/a><figcaption>Councilmember Tiffany Cab\u00e1n is a member of the Democratic Socialists.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span>Michael M. Santiago<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Others who work or live nearby confirmed the office is sometimes shuttered for two- and three-week stretches since Cab\u00e1n\u2019s two-year term on the Council began in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Several complained that the few times they tracked down someone at the office they quickly realized they were wasting time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a rat problem,\u201d said Fatiha Burger, a 68-year-old retired teacher. \u201cI came and complained and she didn\u2019t do anything about it. Rice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Office rent for council members is paid for through taxpayer funds overseen by City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. Both Cab\u00e1n and Adams\u2019 offices declined to say how much Cab\u00e1n pays in office rent, even though the information should be public. <\/p>\n<p>Several Queens Council members in districts where real estate is not as hot as Astoria pay $5,200 to $7,700 monthly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstituent services are the lifeblood of elected officials, and closing district offices is simply unacceptable,\u201d said Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens). \u201cTaxpayers deserve better, and it sets a poor example for our path to normalcy. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who came under fire for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/15\/aocs-bronx-queens-district-offices-open-just-twice-a-week\/\">providing limited in-person assistance at her New York City district offices.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like Ocasio-Cortez, Cab\u00e1n has embraced remote \u2018working\u2019 throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>However, others wonder if part of the problem is the heat \u2014 and alleged threats \u2014 Cab\u00e1n claims she fielded over her extreme left, fringe political views.<\/p>\n<p>The Defund the Police-promoting pol told\u00a0the NYPD in October that her office was receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/05\/nyc-pol-tiffany-caban-called-cops-after-threats-sources\/\">a slew of\u00a0threatening\u00a0phone calls<\/a> \u2014 just days after she released a \u201cpublic safety\u201d guide that encouraged local merchants to call 311, instead of 911, in most cases.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/NYPICHPDPICT000010311145-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"26820571\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/NYPICHPDPICT000010311145-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Tiffany Cab\u00e1n.\"  ><\/a><figcaption>Cab\u00e1n has embraced remote \u2018working\u2019 throughout the pandemic.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When The Post visited the office Wednesday, it was closed.
