Enthralling stories, like that of Spanish climber and cave-dweller Beatrice Flamini&#8217;s, shed light on what motivates someone to become a cave dweller.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Science &#038; Nature <span>Flamini&#8217;s Life as a Cave Dweller<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>On April 14, Flamini emerged from a cave in the country after spending a record 500 days isolated underground, save for a \u201ctechnical problem\u201d that forced her to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/bivouac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>bivouac<\/span><\/a><span> for eight days on the surface, in a tent. Life underground had taken on its own rhythm of reading, drawing and knitting woolen hats, and taking care of her personal needs. She left her waste at a no-contact collection point and received food in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Released from her grotto, she first asked who would pay for a round of celebratory beers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI was sleeping, or at least dozing, when they came down to get me,\u201d she told reporters, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/apr\/14\/spanish-woman-emerges-after-spending-500-days-living-alone-in-cave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI thought something had happened. I said, \u2018Already? No way.\u2019 I hadn\u2019t finished my book.\u201d Like other record-breaking cave dwellers before her, she had read stacks and stacks, totaling to 60 books. Overall, she called cave life \u201cexcellent, unbeatable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Science &#038; Nature <span>The Downside of Living in Isolation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Flamini&#8217;s GoPro videos share the downsides of living in isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VhMpCHyaMOk\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not that the time passes more quickly or more slowly,\u201d she vents in one video. \u201c[It\u2019s] simply that it doesn\u2019t pass, because it\u2019s always four in the morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In another video, she realizes she has lost something, while hanging from ropes in the cave, and covers her face. \u201cWhat a terrible day,\u201d she says. \u201cI have been wanting to cry all day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Science &#038; Nature <span>What Inspires Someone to Isolate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Decades before Flamini, an Italian sociologist named Maurizio Montalbini spent a total of two years and eight months underground, by his own count, isolating in caves for various stints (210 days here and 366 days there). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One time, he lived in a little underground setup with running water and electricity and wore monitoring equipment to relay his condition to a team of experts. While underground, he read profusely and munched on walnuts and chocolate as time slipped by, as it did for Flamini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What inspires these record-setting isolators to attempt such marathons? Brother Rex, a Catholic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/38199\/the-life-of-a-hermit-a-glimpse-inside-the-little-known-state-of-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>hermit<\/span><\/a><span> from the Portland area, follows a daily schedule filled with prayer, church services, spiritual reading and a certain amount of responding to emails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOne of the most joyful aspects of my life as a hermit is the opportunity God has given me to spend long periods in the silence of solitude,\u201d he says, \u201cto practice being present to God and to my neighbor through prayer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A hermit in his own right, Maine resident Christopher Knight spent 27 years living alone in a tent in the woods, ending in 2013. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/stories-48968502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>According to Michael Finkel<\/span><\/a><span>, who wrote <\/span><span>The Stranger in the Woods<\/span><span> about Knight, \u201cHe was never for a moment, in all 27 years, bored. He was never lonely. He said that he felt almost the opposite of that. He said he felt utterly and intricately connected to everything else in the world. I&#8217;m not going back in there. I need the sun. I used to dream about the dawn. It&#8217;s an experience I would not repeat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And yet he later climbed into Italy\u2019s Grotta Fredda (\u201ccold cave\u201d) in 2006 and stayed there for 235 days, shorter than the three years initially planned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Like Flamini and Montalbini, spelunkers often feel uniquely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/04\/21\/in-deep-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>at home<\/span><\/a><span> in caves, where our ancestors lived <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/wonderwerk-cave-worlds-oldest-home-1961900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>for at least two million years<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Flamini grew fond of her little home, but the process took some effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am where I want to be,\u201d she told herself and acknowledged that what she was missing out on was \u201cpart of the project.
