Recently, some of the bigger stories in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/elon-finally-gets-his-musk-all-over-twitter-with-confirmed-acquisition\">Twitter-Elon saga<\/a> were that NPR , as well as KCRW (a member station of NPR from Santa Monica College), and the CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) were pausing their activity on Twitter or leaving altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NPR was the first to halt activity of its 52 feeds on the social media site after Twitter had designated it \u201cstate-affiliated media\u201d. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/about-npr\/178660742\/public-radio-finances\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/about-npr\/178660742\/public-radio-finances\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR does state<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> that its federal funding is essential, the \u201coverwhelming majority of its funding comes from non-federal sources\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, technically, the label is not entirely untrue in an absolute sense, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/12\/1169269161\/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label#:~:text=Charles%20Dharapak%2FAP-,NPR%20announced%20it%20would%20cease%20posting%20to%20Twitter%20after%20the,%22Government%2Dfunded%20Media.%22&#038;text=NPR%20will%20no%20longer%20post,on%20the%20social%20media%20platform\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/04\/12\/1169269161\/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label#:~:text=Charles%20Dharapak%2FAP-,NPR%20announced%20it%20would%20cease%20posting%20to%20Twitter%20after%20the,%22Government%2Dfunded%20Media.%22&#038;text=NPR%20will%20no%20longer%20post,on%20the%20social%20media%20platform\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR\u2019s issue<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> was that it shared the label with the likes of pretty much pure propaganda outlets such as those of Russia, China, and other autocratic-government media organizations.<\/p>\n<figure data-bordeaux-image-check>\n<div>\n<p><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" alt=\"NPR - NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO - sign at headquarters building entrance\" onerror=\"if(this.src &#038;&#038; and his very balanced fans who clearly took the time to do their research went after the broadcaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"more-unhappy-broadcasters\">More unhappy broadcasters<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, an interview with Musk himself went out from the BBC where he discussed his Twitter takeover and one of the topics brought up was the above-mentioned \u201cgovernment-funded media\u201d label which was also given to the BBC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-65248196\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-65248196\" rel=\"noopener\">confronted by BBC technology reporter James Clayton<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> on the issue, who reiterated the BBC\u2019s objection to the label as it\u2019s funded \u201cby the British public through a license fee.\u201d Musk again offered to change the label to \u201cpublicly-funded,\u201d maintaining his devotion to accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Musk, it seems that this was not enough for the CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), who followed suit with NPR and paused the activity of its official corporate and news accounts as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Funnily enough, it was also given the label of \u201cgovernment-funded media\u201d and had a couple of issues with that. Now, I am not Canadian, but I am starting to see a pattern\u2026. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/cbc-twitter-government-funded-media-1.6812591\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/cbc-twitter-government-funded-media-1.6812591\" rel=\"noopener\">CBC stated<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> that this designation \u201cundermines the accuracy and professionalism\u201d of its journalists&#8217; work and that its \u2018journalistic independence is the cornerstone of who we are as a public broadcaster.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our journalism is impartial and independent. C\u2019est pourquoi nous suspendons nos activit\u00e9s sur @Twitter.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBCRadioCanada\/status\/1648033861152960531\" data-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBCRadioCanada\/status\/1648033861152960531\">April 17, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"See more\">See more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"halting-the-exodus\">Halting the exodus<\/h2>\n<p>So, surely, Musk being a 51-year-old gigamind and ultra-billionaire reacted adequately and addressed these concerns appropriately. Well, let\u2019s see.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CBC\u2019s label was subsequently changed to &#8220;70% Government-funded Media\u201d and when the broadcaster took issue with this as well, he changed it again to &#8220;69% Government-funded Media.&#8221; Australia\u2019s ABC News also said that it was currently liaising with Twitter regarding its new designation as \u201cgovernment-funded media\u201d at the start of this week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/4\/12\/under-musk-twitters-shifting-rules-on-state-media-under-fire\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/4\/12\/under-musk-twitters-shifting-rules-on-state-media-under-fire\" rel=\"noopener\">As reported by Al Jazeera<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>, Twitter quietly backpedaled this whole change and apparently dropped the \u2018state-affiliated\u2019 and \u2018government-funded\u2019 labels altogether &#8211; including for Russian and Chinese governments\u2019 media outlets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is amid the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/twitter-removes-legacy-blue-checks-and-sparks-anger-confusion-ennui\">\u2018blue check verified\u2019 controversy<\/a>, where as of April 20, so-called \u2018legacy\u2019 blue checkmarks, which were given to individuals and entities before Musk\u2019s takeover of Twitter, have disappeared (or are in the process of doing so)&#8230; though some accounts, mainly celebrities with more than 1 million followers, have found their blue checks have reappeared.<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My Twitter account says I\u2019ve subscribed to Twitter Blue. I haven\u2019t.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StephenKing\/status\/1649147510525423626\" data-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StephenKing\/status\/1649147510525423626\">April 20, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"See more\">See more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This begs the question that if no news sources are (arguably) actually accurately identified as state-funded and anyone can be \u201cverified\u201d by subscribing to Twitter Blue, is Twitter going to continue to be the invaluable news source and aggregator that it was until this point (even in its post-Elon takeover era)?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to definitively say \u2018no\u2019 because the future holds plenty of unknowns, but I predict that Twitter\u2019s place in the public consciousness will shift away from this position.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Towards what &#8211; well that remains to be seen and it is kind of anyone\u2019s guess.
