Movie\u201d<\/a>\u00a0continued to rack up coins at the box office, leading ticket sales for the third straight weekend, as the animation hit neared $1 billion after just 18 days in theaters.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The weekend\u2019s top new release, the horror reboot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BqQNO7BzN08\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cEvil Dead Rise\u201d<\/a>\u00a0debuted solidly, launching with $23.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. But that was no match for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/universal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal<\/a> Pictures\u2019 \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,\u201d which grossed $58.2 million in its third weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d is setting a torrid pace for an animated movie. This week, it became the highest-grossing animated released of the pandemic era, with domestic ticket sales up to $434.3 million through Sunday and its global tally at $871.1 million. When \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d soon passes $1 billion worldwide, it will be just the fourth film of the pandemic era to reach that benchmark, following \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home,\u201d \u201cTop Gun Maverick\u201d and \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvil Dead Rise,\u201d From Warner Bros. and New Line, is the fifth installment (and first in a decade) in the thriller franchise that Sam Raimi began with this 1981 ultra-low-budget classic, \u201cEvil Dead.\u201d Though Raimi\u2019s subsequent and much-adored films starring Bruce Campbell grew increasingly slapstick, marrying comedy and horror, the 2013 reboot and \u201cEvil Dead Rise\u201d (with Raimi as an executive producer) rely on chillier frights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvil Dead Rise,\u201d which had a reported budget of $17 million, also had originally been planned as an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/hbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBO<\/a> Max release. When Warner Bros.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/movies-streaming-theaters-affleck-scorsese-a39d060d7b8e23bf27524f09e57d73d5\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">decided direct-to-streaming films weren\u2019t financially appealing<\/a>, it pushed some films \u2013 including \u201cMagic Mike\u2019s Last Dance\u201d and \u201cHouse Party\u201d \u2013 to theaters, and simply canned a few others\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/warner-bros-not-releasing-batgirl-starring-leslie-grace-3808bfc28b0a55c02d60ec66757d2b1a\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">including \u201cBatgirl\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cScoob! Holiday Haunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ben-affleck-matt-damon-air-movie-29d9bfdde9a3f2421b74360e204e5883\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Studios\u2019 \u201cAir,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0likewise initially was intended to go straight to streaming, has also continued to perform well theatrically. The Ben Affleck-directed film, about Nike\u2019s courting of Michael Jordan, dipped a modest 29% in its third weekend with $5.5 million to bring its cumulative total to $41.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>But while horror remains one of the most dependable genres at the box office, and families \u2014 after a long dry spell of all-audience releases \u2014 have flocked to \u201cSuper Mario,\u201d some adult-oriented releases have continued to have a harder time attracting audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Guy Ritchie\u2019s \u201cThe Covenant,\u201d starring Jake Gyllenhaal as an injured army sergeant in Afghanistan, opened with $6.3 million in 2,611 theaters. But with mostly good reviews (81% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and an \u201cA\u201d CinemaScore from ticket buyers, the MGM release may hold well in coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Ari Aster\u2019s \u201cBeau Is Afraid,\u201d the most expensive movie ever made by specialty studio A24, expanded until near-wide release, going from four theaters to 926. Aster\u2019s three-hour opus, received with more mixed reviews than his previous two films (\u201cHereditary,\u201d \u201cMidsommar\u201d), took in $2.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>Searchlight\u2019s \u201cChevalier,\u201d starring Kelvin Harrison as the 18th century French composer and violinist Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, also failed to make a dent. It took in $1.5 million in 1,275 theaters.<\/p>\n<p>But with overall business in movie theaters largely thriving thanks to spring hits like \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d and \u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 4\u201d ($168.9 million domestically in five weeks of release), the theatrical industry will have much to celebrate when it convenes Monday in Las Vegas for the annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cinemacon.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">CinemaCon.<\/a>\u00a0Studios, beginning with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sony-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony<\/a> Pictures on Monday, will hype their summer blockbusters as Hollywood looks to return to pre-pandemic box-office levels.<\/p>\n<p>Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
