Some of the biggest blockbusters of the period, though, could have easily looked completely different, talent-wise. Below, <em>Vogue<\/em> revisits some of the close casting calls that left an indelible mark on Y2K culture.<\/p>\n<h2>Rachel McAdams versus Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs in\u00a0<em>The Devil Wears Prada<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Having starred in\u00a0<em>Mean Girls<\/em> and\u00a0<em>The Notebook<\/em>\u00a0in quick succession in 2004, Rachel McAdams turned down the role of Andy Sachs in\u00a0<em>The Devil Wears Prada<\/em>\u00a0despite being offered the part three times,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/rachel-mcadams-was-offered-anne-hathaways-devil-wears-prada-role-three-times-167352#:~:text=%252525252522We%252525252520offered%252525252520it%252525252520to%252525252520Rachel,Kate%252525252520Hudson%25252525252C%252525252520and%252525252520Kirsten%252525252520Dunst.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to director David Frankel<\/a>.\u00a0Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, and Kirsten Dunst were also all considered for the role before the studio ultimately landed on\u00a0Anne Hathaway.<\/p>\n<h2>Britney Spears versus Rachel McAdams as Allie Hamilton in\u00a0<em>The Notebook<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Speaking of McAdams, casting director Matthew Barry shared in 2021 that her main competition for the role of Allie Hamilton in\u00a0<em>The Notebook<\/em> was, in fact, Britney Spears, who read with Ryan Gosling for the part. Spears had played Lucy Wagner in 2002\u2019s\u00a0<em>Crossroads<\/em> opposite Taryn Manning and Zoe Salda\u00f1a, and had her sights set on Hollywood at that moment in her career. Jessica Simpson, Reese Witherspoon, and Jessica Biel were also all in contention for the part at one point. George Clooney, meanwhile, shared during the 2020 BFI London Film Festival that he had once been lined up to appear as Noah Calhoun, with Paul Newman playing an older version of the character. Clooney changed his mind, though, after revisiting the\u00a0<em>Butch Cassidy &#038; The Sundance Kid<\/em> star\u2019s many classic films. \u201c[After that] I said, \u2018I can\u2019t play you. I don\u2019t look anything like you. This is insane.\u2019 We just wanted to do it because we wanted to work together, [but] it ended up being not the right thing for us to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Emilia Clarke versus Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele in\u00a0<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Despite being a fan of Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed the first installment of the\u00a0<em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> franchise, Emilia Clarke turned down the role of Anastasia Steele due to the volume of sex scenes required. During an interview with\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em> star explained that she had already done so much nudity as Daenerys Targaryen that she feared she would be typecast going forward if she accepted the part. Dakota Johnson, of course, stepped into the Red Room instead.<\/p>\n<h2>Jennifer Lawrence versus Blake Lively as Serena van der Woodsen in\u00a0<em>Gossip Girl<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Before her breakthrough role in 2010\u2019s\u00a0<em>Winter\u2019s Bone<\/em>\u2014for which she received her first Academy Award nomination\u2014a teenaged Jennifer Lawrence was in the running to play\u00a0<em>Gossip Girl<\/em>\u2019s Serena van der Woodsen. \u201cWe did not realize this at the time, but Jennifer Lawrence really wanted to play Serena and auditioned,\u201d series creator Josh Schwartz told\u00a0Vulture in the run up to the drama\u2019s 10-year anniversary. \u201cThis story came to us secondhand, but we were told she definitely auditioned and was bummed to not get it.\u201d Also of note in terms of <em>GG<\/em> casting? Greta Gerwig told Huffpost Live that she auditioned for the part of\u00a0Eva Coupeau, Chuck Bass\u2019s insouciantly chic French girlfriend, ultimately played by Cl\u00e9mence Po\u00e9sy.<\/p>\n<h2>Nicole Kidman versus Julia Roberts as Anna Scott in\u00a0<em>Notting Hill<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Despite already being well-established in Hollywood by the late \u201990s, Nicole Kidman got passed over for the part of Anna Scott in\u00a0<em>Notting Hill<\/em>\u00a0in favor of Julia Roberts. (She would later go on to star with Hugh Grant in\u00a0<em>The Undoing<\/em>, with the pair speculating about what might have been throughout the press tour.) Six years later, Kidman signed on to play the Jane to Brad Pitt\u2019s John in\u00a0<em>Mr. &#038; Mrs. Smith<\/em> before dropping out due to her <em>Stepford Wives<\/em> filming schedule\u2014inadvertently giving rise to the Brangelina phenomenon in the process.<\/p>\n<h2>Henry Cavill versus Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in\u00a0<em>Twilight<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When the news that\u00a0<em>Twilight<\/em> would be adapted for the big screen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/article\/twilight-tv-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(the first time)<\/a> broke, author Stephenie Meyer shared that she had always envisioned Henry Cavill in the lead role\u2014although, at 24, he would now be deemed too old to play a high schooler. Robert Pattinson would go on to beat out more than 5,000 actors to play Edward Cullen. Kristen Stewart, too, was up against a wealth of Hollywood talent for the role of Bella Swan, including\u00a0<em>Emily in Paris<\/em>\u2019s Lily Collins.<\/p>\n<h2>Matthew McConaughey versus Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in\u00a0<em>Titanic<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Matthew McConaughey\u2014a staple of rom-coms throughout the aughts\u2014revealed in 2021 that he made it as far as auditioning with Kate Winslet for the role of Jack Dawson in\u00a0<em>Titanic<\/em>. \u201cSo I went and read with Kate Winslet,\u201d he told Rob Lowe on his podcast in 2021. \u201cThey filmed it, so it was like, into screen test time. After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me, and when we got outside, they were like, \u2018That went great.\u2019 I mean, kind of, like, hugs. I really thought it was going to happen. It did not.\u201d As for the part of Rose DeWitt Bukater? James Cameron reportedly had his eye on Claire Danes\u2014who had just finished filming\u00a0<em>Romeo + Juliet<\/em>\u00a0with Leonardo DiCaprio\u2014for the female lead, but she turned him down, knowing she wasn\u2019t ready for the level of fame that the blockbuster would bring.<\/p>\n<h2>JoJo versus Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana<\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Miley Cyrus has been candid about the fact that the casting process for\u00a0<em>Hannah Montana<\/em> proved grueling\u2014not least because the Disney Channel had already set its sights on an older teenage actor, deeming the 11-year-old Cyrus too young after her first audition. Instead, JoJo was asked to appear as Miley Stewart in the record-setting tween series, but turned it down because she wanted to take her career in another direction. Ultimately, Miley won over the Disney team, with the series premiering a few months after her 13th birthday.<\/p>\n<h2>Angelina Jolie versus Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in <em>Clueless<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<p><span>Photos: Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Surreally enough, Angelina Jolie was put forward for the role of Cher Horowitz in\u00a0<em>Clueless<\/em>. \u201cIt was the first time I\u2019d seen Angelina Jolie,\u201d casting director Carrie Frazier told\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em> 20 years after the premiere. \u201cBut she was too knowing for what was needed for\u00a0<em>Clueless.<\/em> Angelina never came in [to audition] for the project. I was just looking at her tape. I remember an agent pitching her, and I\u2019m going, \u2018No, no, no, this is exactly the opposite of what I need for this.\u2019\u201d Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon were also discussed as possible options before the studio settled on Alicia Silverstone.
