Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/828207\/7-frustrating-windows-11-annoyances-how-to-fix-them.html\">changed or eliminated a lot of those features<\/a> in pursuit more modern, streamlined interface, and in doing so made it harder for some of us to get work done.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t have to be that way. With a free, open-source program called , you can bring back many older features of Windows without missing out on Windows 11\u2019s benefits. It only takes a few minutes to set up, and is brimming with options that can improve your Windows 11 workflow.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to get started:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"installing-explorer-patcher\">Installing Explorer Patcher<\/h2>\n<p>Explorer Patcher is , though the actual download link is a bit buried.<\/p>\n<p>To find it, scroll down to the \u201c\u201d section and click the link to \u201csetup program.\u201d Or, just use . Once you\u2019ve downloaded the EXE file, just double-click it to install.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Quick disclaimer:<\/strong> Microsoft has previously  using Explorer Patcher due to a bug that at one point prevented devices from starting up. While Explorer Patcher quickly resolved this issue, using any program that drastically modifies the core Windows interface carries some risk, especially if you don\u2019t regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/708853\/idrive-quietly-made-a-great-local-backup-tool-and-its-free.html\">back up your data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Still on board? Let\u2019s walk through all the things Explorer Patcher can do.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-modify-the-windows-11-taskbar\">How to modify the Windows 11 taskbar<\/h2>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/noncombinetaskbar.jpg?quality=50&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1200\" alt=\"Explorer Patcher taskbar settings\" width=\"1200\" height=\"661\"><figcaption>\u201cNever combine\u201d taskbar icons, it\u2019s nice to have you back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jared Newman \/ Foundry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Right-click the taskbar after installing Explorer Patcher, and you\u2019ll see a new \u201cProperties\u201d option that brings you to the app\u2019s main menu.<\/p>\n<p>Your first stop should be the \u201cTaskbar\u201d section. Set the Taskbar Style to \u201cWindows 10,\u201d and you\u2019ll see all kinds of options for modifying it. A few options of note:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Combine taskbar icons:<\/strong> Choose \u201cNever combine\u201d to bring back labels for each individual window.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Primary taskbar location:<\/strong> Move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top or sides of the screen instead of the bottom.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taskbar icon size:<\/strong> Information density diehards can opt for smaller icons and labels here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start button style:<\/strong> Explorer Patcher sets the angled Windows 10 icon as the default, but you can also switch back to the flat Windows 11-style icon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This section also has options for hiding the search and task view buttons, but these settings are also available in Windows 11 without any extra software.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"modify-windows-11s-clock-and-notification-panel\">Modify Windows 11\u2019s clock and notification panel<\/h2>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/win7clock.jpg?quality=50&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1200\" alt=\"Explorer Patcher and Windows 7 clock\" width=\"1200\" height=\"886\"><figcaption>Prefer the Windows 7 clock? Enable it here.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jared Newman \/ Foundry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As long as you\u2019re tweaking the Windows 11 task bar, take a minute to visit the \u201cSystem tray\u201d section in Explorer Patcher. You\u2019ll find some useful options here as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Show seconds in the clock:<\/strong> Self-explanatory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control Center button:<\/strong> Explorer Patcher breaks out separate taskbar icons for Wi-Fi and sound, so you can hide the gear-shaped Control Center icon for these functions if you like.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clock:<\/strong> Choose either the Windows 10 or Windows 7 style, and you\u2019ll see only the calendar view instead of the full notifications panel when clicking on the time. (After doing this, consider minimizing the Windows 11 clock in the notification panel as well.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Network:<\/strong> Choose what happens when you click the Wi-Fi or ethernet icon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sound and Battery:<\/strong> Switch between Windows 10 and Windows 7 menus for these icons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that you\u2019ll need to click \u201cRestart File Explorer\u201d in Explorer Patcher\u2019s menu to apply any settings that have an asterisk next to them. Notable options in this menu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Disable the Windows 11 context menu:<\/strong> Bring back the Windows 10-style menu, which gives quicker access to shell extensions and uses text instead of cryptic icons for things like copy and paste.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control Interface:<\/strong> Swap the Windows 11 ribbon for the Windows 10 version or the old Windows 7 command bar (which holds up surprisingly well).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Register as shell extension:<\/strong> Required for settings have have ** next to them, including \u201cShrink address bar height,\u201d \u201cDisable navigation bar,\u201d and \u201cHide search bar completely.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/win11norecs.jpg?quality=50&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1200\" alt=\"Explorer Patcher Start menu settings\" width=\"1200\" height=\"717\"><figcaption>Hiding the \u201cRecommended\u201d section leaves more room for pinned apps.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jared Newman \/ Foundry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While Explorer Patcher doesn\u2019t offer the deep Start menu customization found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/549492\/hands-on-stardocks-start11-largely-solves-the-sins-of-windows-11.html\">Start11<\/a>, it does offer a few helpful options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Start menu style:<\/strong> Bring back Windows 10\u2019s expandable Start menu, complete with tiles and zones. (Note that you can only add apps to this Start menu through File Explorer.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable the \u201cRecommended\u201d section:<\/strong> Adds two more rows for pinned apps in the Windows 11 Start menu by hiding the section for recent apps and documents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Start in All Apps by default:<\/strong> Jumps straight to the alphabetical app list when you click the Start button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/explorerpatchertaskview.jpg?quality=50&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1200\" alt=\"Explorer Patcher task view\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"><figcaption>Explorer Patcher\u2019s \u201cSimple Window Switcher\u201d is deeply customizable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jared Newman \/ Foundry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Explorer Patcher\u2019s other tentpole feature is its ability to customize the multitasking menu. Just head to the \u201cWindow switcher\u201d section, and you\u2019ll see a single item with a handful of options in its drop-down menu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Windows 11:<\/strong> A wide Alt-Tab menu with rounded window corners.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Windows 10:<\/strong> A slightly more compact menu with not-as-rounded corners.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Windows NT:<\/strong> A super compact menu with app icons only.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simple Window Switcher:<\/strong> A menu with customizable height, width, opacity, padding, and scroll wheel controls, plus an option to show the desktop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"more-explorer-patcher-options\">More Explorer Patcher options<\/h2>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/explorerpatchermore.jpg?quality=50&#038;strip=all\" alt=\"More options in Explorer Patcher\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><figcaption>Not a fan of Windows 11\u2019s rounded corners? Not a problem.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jared Newman \/ Foundry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Beyond the options above, Explorer Patcher has a handful of other toggles that are worth considering, which you\u2019ll find in the appropriately-named \u201cOther\u201d tab:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open clock flyout:<\/strong> Use Win+C to show the clock instead of Teams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable rounded corners:<\/strong> Brings back more of the Windows 10 aesthetic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable quadrants when snapping windows:<\/strong> This makes two-way split-screen much easier to invoke.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"uninstalling-explorer-patcher\">Uninstalling Explorer Patcher<\/h2>\n<p>Explorer Patcher is easy to remove, as you\u2019ll find it inside Windows 11\u2019s app list. Just head to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, search for \u201cExplorer Patcher,\u201d then hit \u201c\u2026\u201d and click the Uninstall button.
