{"id":640561,"date":"2023-04-23T09:56:24","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T14:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/23\/googles-gigantic-san-jose-campus-is-on-hold\/"},"modified":"2023-04-23T09:56:24","modified_gmt":"2023-04-23T14:56:24","slug":"googles-gigantic-san-jose-campus-is-on-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/23\/googles-gigantic-san-jose-campus-is-on-hold\/","title":{"rendered":"Google\u2019s gigantic San Jose campus is on hold"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Google has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2014\/2\/26\/5444030\/company-town-how-google-is-taking-over-mountain-view\">gobbling up bigger and bigger patches of Silicon Valley<\/a> for as long as we\u2019ve reported on the company, but it may be pulling back from its biggest development yet \u2014 <em>after<\/em> razing small parts of San Jose to the ground.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/21\/googles-80-acre-san-jose-mega-campus-on-hold-amid-economic-slowdown-.html\"><em>CNBC <\/em>reports<\/a> that following the first demolition phase, Google has halted construction on its \u201cDowntown West\u201d campus, which was slated to turn 80 acres of downtown San Jose, California into 7.3 million square feet of offices, 4,000 housing units, 50,000 square feet of retail and cultural space, and 15 acres of parks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconvalley.com\/2022\/03\/01\/google-downtown-san-jose-19-billion-real-estate-office-tech-home\/\">The city believed the project could reach a value of $19 billion<\/a> and offer 20,000 jobs after more than a decade of work. <\/p>\n<p>Google isn\u2019t denying the report, with spokesperson Bailey Tomson providing this statement to <em>The Verge:<\/em> <\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As we\u2019ve\u00a0stated, we\u2019re working to ensure our real estate investments match the future needs of our hybrid workforce, our business and our communities. While we\u2019re assessing how to best move forward with Downtown West, we\u2019re still committed to San Jos\u00e9 for the long term and believe in the importance of the development.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>While that statement could mean anything from \u201cwe\u2019ve had a minor pause\u201d to \u201cwe\u2019re not interested in doing it anymore,\u201d Tomson also pointed us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2023\/02\/13\/google-downtown-san-jose-transit-village-tech-office-home-job-layoff\/\">this <em>San Jose Mercury News<\/em> story<\/a> which suggests that Google is merely changing the timeline, and where quoted business leaders and development directors seem hopeful that it\u2019s merely a pause.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Zoom\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><span><img alt=\"An image from 2020 of the proposed Google plan that shows how large it might be.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\"   src=\"https:\/\/duet-cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/0x0:1920x1080\/2400x1350\/filters:focal(960x540:961x541):format(webp)\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/21947236\/Screen_Shot_2020_10_08_at_4.10.50_PM.png\" data-old-src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><figcaption><em>An image from 2020 of the proposed Google plan that shows how large it might be.<\/em><\/figcaption><p><cite>Image: Google (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TUvYaP4YT00?t=139\">YouTube<\/a>)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>CNBC <\/em>seems a little less hopeful, pointing out that Google is currently trying to reduce its office space rather than growing it, to the point it\u2019ll incur costs of half a billion dollars this quarter. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/20\/23563706\/google-layoffs-12000-jobs-cut-sundar-pichai\">The company cut 12,000 jobs in January<\/a>. Google\u2019s chief contractor also appears to be out of work for an indefinite period: it has laid off over 60 employees, with sources informing the publication they haven\u2019t been told when construction might continue. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile sources are optimistic that a campus will be built at some point and said Google representatives have expressed a commitment to it, they\u2019re concerned the project may not reach the scale promised in the original master plan,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> writes.<\/p>\n<p>San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan downplayed the <em>CNBC<\/em> story to local reporters today, saying he\u2019d just gotten off a call with Google to confirm nothing had changed beyond reassessing the timeline for construction, according to a video recording provided by his office to <em>The Verge<\/em>.
