In addition to that, he\u2019s also heavily invested in the success of his friends and family who compete in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>One such example, of course, is Islam Makhachev. The UFC lightweight champion has always been close with Khabib and, in many ways, has been his successor at 155 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Back in February, however, he came close to losing his belt in an absolute war against Alexander Volkanovski. Islam managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjpenn.com\/mma-news\/ufc\/pros-react-after-islam-makhachev-defeats-alexander-volkanovski-at-ufc-284\/\">come out on top<\/a> in the eyes of the judges, but \u2018The Great\u2019 pushed him to his limit.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Khabib was already aware of how dangerous Volkanovski was going to be.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BtkDqleQYkY?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhabib would call me up and would say, \u2018Coach I\u2019m really worried about this fight, Volkanovski is really tough, I\u2019m concerned for Islam a little bit on this one,\u2019\u201d Mendez said. \u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019m not, we\u2019re gonna win this fight. I don\u2019t know how easy or how hard, but we\u2019re gonna win this fight.
