Meet Dejana Backo, an\u00a0artist and athlete who has overcome challenges and found success in\u00a0the world of\u00a0art and sports. With a\u00a0strong message of\u00a0self-discovery and empowerment, Backo is\u00a0using her platform to\u00a0raise awareness about disability-related issues and inspire others. However, a\u00a0new chapter has begun for Backo, as\u00a0she recently became a\u00a0mother, leading her to\u00a0take a\u00a0break from the things she loves the most.<\/p>\n

She embraces her body the way it\u00a0is.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Dejana Backo, a\u00a0renowned Serbian artist and athlete, was born on\u00a0December\u00a09, 1994, in\u00a0Novi Sad. Despite being born without upper extremities, she has never let that hinder her life. Her inspiring journey of\u00a0self-discovery led her to\u00a0become an\u00a0accomplished artist and athlete.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0a\u00a0kid, Backo used to\u00a0ask<\/a> her mother why she was born without arms. But as\u00a0she grew older, she came to\u00a0realize that her disability did not define her or\u00a0limit her ability to\u00a0lead a\u00a0fulfilling existence. Her zest for life extends to\u00a0her personal life as\u00a0well. She is\u00a0deeply in\u00a0love with her partner, a\u00a0fitness instructor, and together, they enjoy exploring new places and sharing their adventures on\u00a0social media.<\/p>\n

Backo joined<\/a> the Society of\u00a0Mouth and Foot Painters at\u00a0the young age of\u00a09, which motivated her to\u00a0pursue her art even more. She graduated from the Design Art School in\u00a02014 and later enrolled in\u00a0the Academy of\u00a0Fine Arts in\u00a0Novi Sad. Over the years, Backo has held solo exhibitions in\u00a0nearly 20\u00a0cities across different countries around the Balkans.<\/p>\n

Also known<\/a> as\u00a0the \u201cgirl with wings,\u201d she has become a\u00a0symbol of\u00a0empowerment and perseverance in\u00a0Serbia. Despite being born without arms, Backo has soared to\u00a0new heights and achieved remarkable success in\u00a0sports. Her impressive achievements include being a\u00a0world champion in\u00a0para taekwondo, a\u00a0historic first for Serbia, which she won at\u00a0the World Para Taekwondo Championship in\u00a0Turkey in\u00a02019.<\/p>\n

And she\u2019ll soon fly from athletics to\u00a0motherhood.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

In\u00a0February 2023, Dejana Backo reached another significant milestone in\u00a0her life by\u00a0giving birth to\u00a0her first child. To\u00a0prepare for this momentous occasion, she decided to\u00a0take a\u00a0break<\/a> from competing, which meant missing out on\u00a0the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. However, even though she won\u2019t be\u00a0competing for a\u00a0while, she is\u00a0still actively spreading her message on\u00a0social media.<\/p>\n

Backo has always had a\u00a0passion for art, but her interest in\u00a0sports is\u00a0relatively stronger. She was driven to\u00a0switch to\u00a0sports because she wanted to\u00a0compete in\u00a0the Paralympic Games. Back in\u00a02016, Backo started practicing Para taekwondo, and she was able to\u00a0win the K41 women\u2019s \u221247\u00a0kg division. Way to\u00a0go, Backo!<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0all have some difficulties as\u00a0people with disabilities,\u201d the athlete explained, candidly<\/a>. \u201cBut if\u00a0you have a\u00a0good picture of\u00a0yourself, if\u00a0you know who you are and what your worth is\u00a0and you act within that, you can pass all the negatives and focus on\u00a0the positives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backo acknowledges that having a\u00a0baby will impact her sports career. She plans to\u00a0take a\u00a0break before starting her training again, which may affect her athletic performance. However, the mom is\u00a0confident that she will be\u00a0able to\u00a0overcome any obstacles that come her way.<\/p>\n

Dejana Backo continues to\u00a0use her platform to\u00a0raise awareness and inspire others. Despite taking a\u00a0break from competing, she is\u00a0still actively engaging with her followers on\u00a0social media.
