{"id":630792,"date":"2023-04-18T19:55:50","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T00:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/18\/exclusive-analysis-shows-tolent-collapsed-owing-around-76m\/"},"modified":"2023-04-18T19:55:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T00:55:50","slug":"exclusive-analysis-shows-tolent-collapsed-owing-around-76m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/18\/exclusive-analysis-shows-tolent-collapsed-owing-around-76m\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Analysis shows Tolent collapsed owing around \u00a376m"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span>Dozens of civil engineering firms and sub-contractors face losing hundreds of thousands of pounds as Gateshead-based contractor Tolent owed around \u00a376m when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/tolent-collapses-into-administration-13-02-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collapsed earlier this year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><em>Construction News<\/em> analysed extensive accounts published <\/span><span>by administrator Interpath Advisory for six companies in the Tolent group, while details about one final subsidiary are still yet to be published.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>CN <\/i>found that the Tolent companies have a total debt load of \u00a3107m, including \u00a332m of intercompany loans. Collectively, the companies owe \u00a34.2m to HMRC, as well as \u00a34.6m to lender and secured creditor IGF.<\/p>\n<p>The Tolent firms owe a further \u00a367m to dozens of other companies, with \u00a329m being owed to trade creditors \u2013 Tolent&#8217;s supply chain.<\/p>\n<p><span>Tolent Construction Limited owes the most money, with \u00a346.7m due to unsecured creditors\u00a0which are not expected to recoup any of their losses, according to Interpath Advisory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tolent Living meanwhile owes unsecured creditors \u00a316.6m; Tolent PLC, the group&#8217;s holding company, owes unsecured creditors \u00a310.9m; Tolent Homes owes \u00a37.9m; Tolent Solutions owes \u00a37.5m; and Ravensworth Properties owes \u00a38.6m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tolent Construction Limited owes 36 firms more than \u00a3100,000 each. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Subcontractors which are owed the most money include insurance broker Lockton Companies LLP (\u00a3856,000), a US-headquartered firm with an office in London; Technic Concrete Floors Ltd, a contractor based in Leigh (\u00a3740,000); Northumbria-based Premier Plant &#038; Civils Engineering (\u00a3689,000); Oxford-based Donaldson Timber Systems (\u00a3675,000); and Durham-based civil engineer WYN Construction (\u00a3668,000).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tolent Living owes 16 trade creditors over \u00a3100,000 each, including Durham-based renewable energy firm Clear Climate Limited (\u00a3695,000); Hartlepool-based N&#038;T Civils Limited (\u00a3507,000) and Darwen-based insulation supplier ECO Giant Ltd (\u00a3492,000).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>Durham disaster<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Accounting documents published by Interpath Advisory show Tolent suffered major losses on a scheme in Durham which, combined with tightening credit conditions, led to the demise of the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> The administrator said the troubled contract to build an \u00a385m, mixed-use development at Milburngate in Durham had cost the firm \u201csignificant management time\u201d and led to \u00a310m in cost overruns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhilst the construction of the site was substantially completed in 2022, the company experienced delays in final sign-off of the development which absorbed significant management time,&#8221; it said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn total, project costs in relation to Milburngate overran by approximately \u00a310m and <\/span><span>presented a significant strain on the group\u2019s financial headroom\/available cash.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The contractor&#8217;s management looked to stem losses by selling off land and issuing a shareholder rights issue; however the firm began to experience tightening credit conditions, withdrawal of trade credit insurance and customers requiring cash-backed performance bonds. <\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>Snow and excessive cold in mid-December also coincided with the Christmas shutdown and further strained margins and working capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Contract legacy<\/h3>\n<p><span>Interpath Advisory became involved with Tolent as a consultant in December 2022, and was later appointed as administrator to the group in February, when 313 staff were made redundant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/tolent-collapses-into-administration-13-02-2023\/\"><span>Gateshead-based Tolent<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0was one of the largest regional contractors in the North East, with a revenue of \u00a3200m, and was the 67th largest practice in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn100-2022-the-top-100-uk-contractors-12-09-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CN100 ranking of the UK\u2019s biggest contractors in 2022.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tolent was working on 16 live contracts at the point of its collapse, including the Milburngate scheme. Administrators said \u201c it was not clear whether profit remained within the contracts\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Interpath Advisory said it investigated whether ongoing contracts could be sold on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, buyers \u201cultimately did not attribute value to the interest in contracts that may be loss making\u201d and could be terminated by the contract employer, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s workers and workload in Teesside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/sunderland-builder-takes-over-tolents-teeside-operations-22-02-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were snapped by Brims Construction<\/a> with the help of Tolent founder John Wood, with no money being paid to the administration apart from the \u00a3500,000 purchase of Tolent&#8217;s Teesside office.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/tolent-the-tragic-collapse-of-a-200m-contractor-10-03-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exclusive interview with <em>CN<\/em><\/a>, Wood said the collapse of Tolent, which he founded in 1989, was \u201ctragic\u201d and added that work on Millburn Gate had gone \u201cwildy wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/news\/exclusive-analysis-shows-tolent-collapsed-owing-around-76m-18-04-2023\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n <span \n                data-original-string='XVkzlSj8JyM+UUQd+9G1qw==7f4L3M+Q4jfmwOnVa48ub+keZEUxlgKVFrpVy6RleHXI3A='\n                class='apbct-email-encoder'\n                title='This contact has been encoded by Anti-Spam by CleanTalk.
