The franchise\u2019s biggest worry back then was how to finance parking that would accommodate them all, a concern that didn\u2019t seem to trouble Snyder, a lifelong fan who called buying the team \u201cthe most wonderful thing that\u2019s ever happened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my dreams,&#8221; Snyder said after the sale was confirmed, \u201cwe\u2019d win the Super Bowl next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the time he agreed in principle to sell the Washington Commanders for a record $6 billion on Thursday, Snyder was ravaged by scandals which drew N.F.L. investigations and legal inquiry. The formerly brash, big-spending owner had been pressured into changing the team\u2019s name and logo, buying out his partners and, eventually, to awaken from a dream which had turned into a nightmare for many.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Snyder\u2019s dream, the team never won the Super Bowl in his tenure, or even made it as far as a conference championship game.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here are some key moments from Daniel Snyder\u2019s tenure as owner of the N.F.L.\u2019s Washington Commanders.<\/p>\n<p>JUNE 2000<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-44211568\"><span><strong>Snyder spends big on splashy free agents.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stirring the fan base early, Snyder added future two future Hall of Famers, defensive end Bruce Smith and cornerback Deion Sanders, who signed a seven-year deal worth up to $56 million, as well as quarterback Jeff George. Snyder said that the $10 a person charge <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Sports\/story?id=100874&#038;page=1\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">would help improve access<\/a> to players.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Jan. 7, 2006<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-6261bff2\"><span><strong>A playoff drought begins.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Washington won, 17-10, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2005 N.F.C. The team won judgments of $2 million against the fans, including many who defaulted on the contracts because of financial losses during the economic downturn.<\/p>\n<p>OCTOBER 2009<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-a3aba86\"><span><strong>Fans are barred from bringing signs and banners to games.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After starting the season 2-4, the team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/20\/sports\/football\/20nfl.html\" title>stripped head coach Jim Zorn of the responsibility to call plays<\/a>, handing it to an assistant coach lured out of retirement in Week 5. The team banned spectators from bringing any signs or banners into FedEx Field, citing security and comfort, after an increase in the number of signs critical of Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, a front office executive. Washington was penalized $18 million a year for two years, and Dallas paid $5 million a year for two years.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder joined Jerry Jones in fighting the penalties, one of many times the owners of two of the most valuable franchises bonded on a host of league issues including labor and television rights negotiations. Cornerstones of a bloc of hard line owners, the friends even filmed a Papa John\u2019s commercial together in 2010. Jones would remain Snyder\u2019s staunchest ally as scandals enveloped the Washington franchise.<\/p>\n<p>MAY 2013<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-447d9eec\"><span><strong>Facing protests over the team\u2019s name, Snyder says it will \u201cnever\u201d change.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For almost 90 years, Washington\u2019s pro football team was known as the Redskins, a word that is considered a slur against Native Americans. Facing protests over the name and mascot, and a federal lawsuit over the trademark, Snyder told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/redskins\/2013\/05\/09\/washington-redskins-daniel-snyder\/2148127\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today<\/a> that he would never change the name. \u201cIt\u2019s that simple. Never \u2014 you can use caps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"photoviewer-wrapper\">\n<figure aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\">\n<div>\n<p><span>Image<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Native American leaders protested against Washington\u2019s former team name and logo, which are considered offensive references.<\/span><span><span>Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Bruce Kluckhohn\/Associated Press<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>MAY 2018<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-7b50bb81\"><span><strong>Cheerleaders accuse the team of sexual harassment.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 2018, five former cheerleaders told The New York Times that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/02\/sports\/redskins-cheerleaders-nfl.html\" title>they were sexually harassed and intimidated by the team<\/a> and sponsors during a trip to Costa Rica for a swimsuit calendar photo shoot. The cheerleaders described being \u201cpimped out\u201d to the team\u2019s male sponsors who were invited to photo shoots where the cheerleaders were made to pose for photos while scantily dressed or, in some cases, naked.<\/p>\n<p>After an internal investigation that lasted four months, Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/redskins-implement-changes-to-cheerleading-program-after-investigating-mistreatment\/2018\/09\/27\/6d1564f4-c2a4-11e8-a1f0-a4051b6ad114_story.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced changes<\/a> to the cheerleading team, including \u201cmore conservative outfits,\u201d the inclusion of male cheerleaders, and a ban on suite holders at the team\u2019s photo shoots. In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/03\/sports\/football\/washington-football-team-cheerleaders.html\" title>the cheerleading program was scrapped in favor a coed dance team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>July 13, 2020<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-5e10f61\"><span>Pressure from corporate sponsors leads Washington to retire its contentious nickname.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Days after the team\u2019s biggest corporate sponsor, FedEx, asked the team to reconsider its name and mascot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/13\/sports\/football\/washington-redskins-new-name.html\" title>Washington announced in a statement<\/a> that it would drop the name and logo and rebrand. The franchise would be identified as the Washington Football Team until a replacement was decided upon.<\/p>\n<p>The move came weeks after other team sponsors, including Nike and Pepsi, received letters from investors who called on the companies to cut their ties with the team. On July 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/10\/sports\/football\/dan-snyder-washington-redskins-name-fedex.html\" title>FedEx, which pays about $8 million a year to have its name on the team\u2019s stadium in Landover, Md., told the team in a letter<\/a> that if the team did not change its nickname it would ask that \u201cFedEx\u201d be taken off the stadium at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nike had stopped selling the team\u2019s gear, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WalmartInc\/status\/1279141523867734016?s=20\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/target-walmart-pull-washington-redskins-merchandise-from-online-stores-51594053993\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Target<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/07\/09\/washington-redskins-amazon-stop-selling-merchandise\/5404092002\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a> \u2014 some of the country\u2019s largest retailers \u2014 had said they would stop selling Washington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmart.com\/cp\/nfl-fan-shop\/1423455?search_redirect=true&#038;redirect_query=redskins&#038;redirectQuery=redskins\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">merchandise on their websites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>JULY 16, 2020<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-7fcdda89\"><span><strong>Female employees detail sexual harassment and verbal abuse.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In July 2020, The Washington Post published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2020\/07\/16\/redskins-sexual-harassment-larry-michael-alex-santos\/?arc404=true\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">investigation<\/a> into the mistreatment of the team\u2019s female employees, citing 15 former front office workers.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder fired several top executives who were named in the harassment accusations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/16\/sports\/football\/washington-sexual-assault-harassment-dan-snyder.html\" title>hired<\/a> a Washington-based law firm, Wilkinson Stekloff, to look into the allegations. The staff member and Snyder denied the claims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>October 2021<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-47a9573a\"><span>Jon Gruden\u2019s emails to the team president go public.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The New York Times and Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/11\/sports\/football\/what-did-jon-gruden-say.html\" title>published emails sent<\/a> between 2011 and 2018 in which Jon Gruden, the former Buccaneers coach turned TV analyst, wrote racist and misogynist comments to Bruce Allen, then the president of the Washington team.<\/p>\n<p>The emails were discovered during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/01\/sports\/football\/nfl-washington-fine-snyder.html\" title>review of workplace misconduct at the Washington Football Team<\/a>. As the women who brought forward sexual harassment claims against the team lobbied for the N.F.L.\u2019s investigation to be made public, members of Congress sought to review related documents.<\/p>\n<p>JANUARY 2022<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"link-5237486a\"><span><strong>FedEx stands collapse on Eagles fans.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Several Philadelphia Eagles fans fell from their seats when a railing near a player tunnel collapsed, nearly landing on Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts after a game in 2022.
