There are many notable songs among the lineup, including \u201cLike a Virgin,\u201d &#8220;All I Want For Christmas Is You,&#8221; &#8220;Stairway To Heaven,&#8221; and \u201cSweet Dreams (Are Made of This).&#8221; Carl Sagan&#8217;s reading of his book, <em>Pale Blue Dot,<\/em> is also being inducted. But there&#8217;s one particular composition that&#8217;s making its own slice of history, as Koji Kondo&#8217;s <em>Super Mario Bros.<\/em> theme becomes the first piece of video game music to enter the registry.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/tag\/mario\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0\">Mario<\/a> overworld music, which is officially titled &#8220;Ground Theme,&#8221; is &#8220;perhaps the most recognizable video game theme in history,&#8221; <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.loc.gov\/news\/national-recording-registry-inducts-music-from-madonna--mariah-carey--queen-latifah--daddy-yankee\/s\/5a91b115-3825-4a5f-a702-35940b4de958\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0\">according to the Library of Congress<\/a>. It&#8217;s hard to argue with that. Kondo (pictured above left) took inspiration from Latin music to create magic on the Nintendo Entertainment System&#8217;s five-channel sound chip for the original 1985 game.<\/p>\n<div id=\"bb846a25e5474e69849e74b01aa215ac\">\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A video game theme song, probably the most recognizable in history, is also a first for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NatRecRegistry?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0\">#NatRecRegistry<\/a>. We had jingles to encourage players to try again after getting a \u2018game over,\u2019 fanfares to congratulate them for reaching goals and pieces that sped up when the time remaining grew short.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kondo, who said it was an honor to have his work placed in the National Recording Registry, is still working for Nintendo. Most recently, you may have heard his work in <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/super-mario-bros-movie-review-fun-safe-romp-135146207.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0\"><em>The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Library of Congress houses millions of books, recordings, photos, newspapers, maps and manuscripts. For several years, it also attempted to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017-12-26-library-of-congress-limiting-twitter-archives-2018.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0\">archive every single tweet<\/a>. So, you may find it comforting to know that the legendary Mario theme is now immortalized alongside a slapdash post about what you had for breakfast in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update 4\/13 9:50AM ET:<\/strong> A previous version of this story indicated that Kondo also took inspiration from Japanese jazz fusion band T-Square when creating the Mario theme.
