{"id":627308,"date":"2023-04-09T09:49:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-09T14:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/09\/substack-ceo-pushes-back-at-elon-says-twitter-situation-is-very-frustrating\/"},"modified":"2023-04-09T09:49:44","modified_gmt":"2023-04-09T14:49:44","slug":"substack-ceo-pushes-back-at-elon-says-twitter-situation-is-very-frustrating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/09\/substack-ceo-pushes-back-at-elon-says-twitter-situation-is-very-frustrating\/","title":{"rendered":"Substack CEO pushes back at Elon, says Twitter situation is \u201cvery frustrating\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Quick recap: Substack, the popular subscription newsletter platform for writers, launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/5\/23670452\/substack-notes-tweets-posts-twitter\">a new feature in its app called Notes<\/a> last week, which is fairly similar to Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter, the world-historical clown car of a company currently operated by Elon Musk, responded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/6\/23673043\/twitter-substack-embeds-bots-tools-api\">blocking the ability to like or retweet any posts<\/a> containing the word \u201cSubstack,\u201d throwing up a warning message if users clicked on Substack links, and finally blocking even the <em>word<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/8\/23675398\/twitter-is-now-redirecting-searches-for-substack-to-newsletter\">Substack from being searched<\/a>. Substack users, the vast majority of whom are independent small business owners who depend on Substack as an enterprise software provider, mostly responded to this by saying they would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/7\/23674427\/substack-twitter-writers-founders-mad-restrictions-elon-musk\">leave Twitter and use Substack Notes<\/a>. (There\u2019s more here, but it\u2019s a combo platter of hilarious and tiresome given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/7\/23674705\/twitter-files-elon-musk-substack-matt-taibbi\">some of the personalities involved<\/a>. Just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/6\/23673067\/twitter-api-shutdown-bots-botpocalypse-begins\">click the links<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Musk sort-of explained his decision in a reply this week by claiming that Substack was \u201ctrying to download a massive portion of the Twitter database to bootstrap their Twitter clone\u201d which is very funny \u2014 just imagine starting any sort of Twitter competitor and <em>prepopulating it<\/em> <em>with the garbage of Twitter \u2014\u00a0<\/em>and also a pretty huge claim to make without any evidence.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Zoom\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><span><img alt=\"A screenshot of a Substack Notes post from CEO Chris Best, responding to a tweet from Elon Musk.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\"   src=\"https:\/\/duet-cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/0x0:890x1256\/2400x3387\/filters:focal(445x628:446x629):format(webp)\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/24571807\/IMG_0152.jpeg\" data-old-src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption>The Substack Notes post from CEO Chris Best.<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Anyhow, Substack CEO Chris Best responded to Elon with a post on Substack Notes, of course. The feature in in beta so there\u2019s no permalink as yet, but he passed it along to us and we\u2019re posting a screenshot so people can refer to it.<\/p>\n<p> Best says Substack has used the Twitter API for years and thinks they\u2019re in compliance with the terms of service; the implication is that Twitter never told the company about any alleged violation. And of course, Best says the whole situation is \u201cvery frustrating,\u201d with a nod to the fact that Substack writers are actually <em>customers<\/em> of his enterprise software product; messing with Substack links has more impact on individual small business owners than it does on the platform company.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting here that Andreesen Horowitz is an investor in both Substack and neo-Twitter, so that\u2019s going great. And if you\u2019re reading this you can probably just react to the phrases \u201cfree speech,\u201d \u201cTwitter,\u201d and \u201cElon Musk\u201d in whatever way kicks your Saturday night off right.
