Ethan\u00a0Boyes was riding his bike in the Presidio on Tuesday afternoon when a driver struck and killed him, officials confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Boyes, 44, was a San Francisco resident and highly accomplished cyclist. He won several national titles and set several records for over-40 cyclists and set an American record for the 500-meter \u201cflying start\u201d track time trial, according to USA Cycling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was literally one of the nicest people I\u2019ve ever met \u2014 not only in the small circle of track cycling\u2026 but anywhere!\u201d track cyclist and former teammate Karl Baumgart\u00a0wrote<\/a> in a message on Facebook. \u201c\u2026 He also just so happened to be one of the fastest sprinters in the World.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Park Police said officers responded to a report of \u201ca crash between a car and a bicyclist\u201d on\u00a0Arguello Boulevard, south of Washington Boulevard, at 4 p.m. on April 4. At the scene, officers found Boyes with serious injuries, according to the report. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died, according to a statement from U.S. Park Police. The driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The agency said no additional details are available at this time and the crash is under investigation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Boyes was a regular at the Polo Fields cycling track<\/a> in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and was a fixture in the local cycling community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou couldn\u2019t miss him with his custom Look track frame with googly eyes,\u201d Veronika Volok, a friend of Boyes, wrote in an email to SFGATE. \u201cHe was known to be a sprinter, a damn good one too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volok said she first met Boyes at the\u00a0Hellyer Velodrome<\/a>\u00a0in San Jose.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan was a very special person,\u201d she said. \u201cThe cycling community, especially the track community, won\u2019t be the same.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Friends were shocked by Boyes’ death and left an outpouring of comments<\/a> on a photo of his Look bicycle posted on Instagram.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis can\u2019t be true, felt like I just saw you not to long ago,\u201d wrote one person. \u201cThanks for always being an inspiration and such a stellar guy on and off the track. Till next time Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another commenter, who met Boyes at age 19 in 2010, wrote, \u201cYou inspired me and showed me how to really live that bike life. You will always be a friend, legend, smiling face and an overall amazing human.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boyes was from Boone, North Carolina, according to his Facebook <\/a>page.<\/p>\n
