{"id":626822,"date":"2023-04-07T10:02:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T15:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/07\/the-worlds-first-self-driving-bus-fleet-will-soon-hit-scotlands-streets\/"},"modified":"2023-04-07T10:02:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T15:02:00","slug":"the-worlds-first-self-driving-bus-fleet-will-soon-hit-scotlands-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/07\/the-worlds-first-self-driving-bus-fleet-will-soon-hit-scotlands-streets\/","title":{"rendered":"The world\u2019s first self-driving bus fleet will soon hit Scotland\u2019s streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-main-content\">\n<p>Next time you board a bus in Scotland and it\u2019s driving itself, don\u2019t freak out \u2014 this is all part of a government plan to bring self-driving tech into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p><span>Five fully autonomous buses will be taking to the streets near Edinburgh next month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stagecoachgroup.com\/media\/news-releases\/2023\/2023-04-04.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> <\/span><span> Stagecoach, the UK\u2019s largest bus and coach operator, who will be managing the fleet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The UK government said the project, named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavforth.com\/partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CAVForth<\/a>, <\/span><span>would be the world\u2019s first full-size, self-driving public bus service. CAV stands for \u201cconnected and autonomous vehicles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The service, which aims to transport 10,000 passengers weekly, will initially run a 22.5km circuit route, including a stretch across the iconic Forth Road Bridge \u2013 one of Scotland\u2019s major landmarks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>The <3 of EU tech<\/h2>\n<p>The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. The buses will be operating at AV Level 4, meaning they have a trained safety driver onboard, but the driver will not be expected to touch the controls whilst the vehicle is in autonomous mode.<\/p>\n<p><span>Fully driverless cars are not legally permitted in the UK. Credit: Ian Cardwell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Scottish Minister for Transport, Kevin Stewart, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transport.gov.scot\/transport-network\/roads\/connected-and-autonomous-vehicles-cav\/project-cavforth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the \u201cinnovative and ambitious project\u201d was an \u201cexciting milestone\u201d that <\/span><span>will help Scotland \u201cestablish its credentials on the world stage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Estimated to cost around \u00a36.1m, Project CAVForth is part-funded by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. It is part of the UK government\u2019s \u00a3100 million Intelligent Mobility Fund, which aims to <\/span><span>speed up the commercialisation of self-driving transport technology.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CAVForth\u2019s rollout of the autonomous bus fleet next month will mark a culmination of over four years\u2019 of research, planning, and development. Similar CAV projects are planned in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/science\/1730048\/self-driving-bus-worlds-first-streets-edinburgh-awarded-government-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Sunderland and Belfast<\/span><\/a><span>. <\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Driverless buses are not a new concept. In 2021, a new driverless electric bus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/feb\/25\/driverless-electric-bus-hits-the-road-in-spanish-city-of-malaga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>began<\/span><\/a><span> operating in Malaga, Spain, in a project presented as a first in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the UK, the <\/span><span>Cambridge Connector project, which aims to deploy 13 automated electric vehicles across the city, is set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/telecoms.com\/519705\/self-driving-bus-trial-to-launch-in-cambridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>launch<\/span><\/a><span> next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps Europe\u2019s biggest self-driving car project is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unige.ch\/communication\/communiques\/en\/2022\/55-millions-pour-developper-les-transports-publics-du-futur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>ULTIMO<\/span><\/a><span>, which has a budget of over <\/span><span>\u20ac55m and <\/span><span>will test autonomous public transport services in three European cities: Geneva, Switzerland; Kronach, Germany; and Oslo, Norway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fully autonomous vehicles have long been a goal for major automakers and companies, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/german-startup-vay-drives-first-remote-controlled-car-in-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>plenty of startups<\/span><\/a><span> vying for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/remote-controlled-cars-bridge-to-vehicle-automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>stake in the industry<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><span> It is, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verdict.co.uk\/fully-self-driving-cars-unlikely-before-2035-experts-predict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>unlikely<\/span><\/a><span> that self-driving cars without safety drivers will be spotted on public roads within the next decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-worlds-first-self-driving-bus-fleet-will-soon-hit-scotlands-streets\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Si\u00f4n Geschwindt<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Next time you board a bus in Scotland and it\u2019s driving itself, don\u2019t freak out \u2014 this is all part of a government plan to bring self-driving tech into the mainstream.
