He was born in Los Angeles on Feb. 23, 1987,\u00a0 but was raised in the L.A. suburb of Carson, Ca. As a child, Ab-Soul was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which is a skin condition that causes skin blisters and light-sensitive eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ab-Soul frequently wears sunglasses to cover his eyes due to his condition.<\/p>\n Ab-Soul signed a recording contract with StreetBeat Entertainment<\/strong> in 2005. However,\u00a0 in 2007, he signed to Los Angeles indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment<\/strong>, or TDE<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Shortly after signing with TDE<\/strong>, he befriended labelmate and future rap superstar Kendrick Lamar<\/strong><\/a>. Ab-Soul and Lamar frequently work together on each other\u2019s songs, including the 2010 song, \u201cTurn Me Up.\u201d\u00a0 The rappers worked on the song before either released their debut album.\u00a0<\/p>\n In 2009, Ab-Soul formed the rap group Black Hippy<\/strong>. The group includes four L.A. rappers signed to TDE<\/strong> \u2014 Ab-Soul, Lamar, Jay Rock<\/strong>, and ScHoolboy Q<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The group has no albums together, but frequently collaborates on each other\u2019s solo projects. One song that Black Hippy all worked on was 2016\u2019s \u201cThat Part\u201d remix.
