That\u2019s when the contract with Dott, Tier, and Lime \u2014 the three e-scooter providers currently operating in the city \u2014 will expire.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ban will not have an effect on the e-bikes offered by shared micro-<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/mobility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mobility<\/a> companies, which will remain in the city.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite welcoming e-scooters with open arms in 2018, Paris\u2019 local government has progressively tightened its grip over the past five years, enforcing designated parking zones and speed limits, and restricting the number of operators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But despite the regulations, concerns over safety, following several fatal<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/parisians-vote-ban-e-scooters-french-capital-rcna77849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>accidents<\/span><\/a><span>, and complaints about scooters blocking sidewalks and disrupting other commuters, brought the issue to a head, with many calling for an outright ban.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mayor Hidalgo agreed, saying the e-scooters were a \u201csource of tension and worry.\u201d But instead of banning them outright, she brought the decision to the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In January, the mayor<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/01\/world\/europe\/paris-electrict-scooter-referendum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> what she described as a \u201cpublic consultation\u201d, to settle the issue ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The e-scooter operators quickly launched a counter-offensive, offering free rides to all users that vote in their favour, and employing social media influencers to back their cause. But to no avail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With the results now in, Paris is now set to become the first European capital to ban the mode of transport.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Berlin-based Tier Mobility, Amsterdam-based Dott, and San Francisco-based Lime said they were \u201cdisappointed\u201d by the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The operators<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/paris-votes-to-ban-e-scooter-rental-companies-3ac621c7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a joint statement that the deployment of only 21 ballot stations and no option to vote digitally led to \u201can extremely low turnout, heavily skewed toward older age groups.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2022, Paris recorded about 20 million trips on 15,000 shared e-scooters \u2014 71% of these users were under 35. Many riders are also tourists, who don\u2019t get to vote.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mayor Hidalgo, on the other hand, called the result \u201ca victory for local democracy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But not all politicians were in support of an outright ban. T<\/span><span>ransport Minister Clement Beaune <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/paris-to-ban-e-scooters-despite-tiny-voter-turnout\/a-65206275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>supports<\/span><\/a><span> a continuation of e-scooters in Paris, but with more rules. <span>He called the turnout \u201ca massive democratic flop\u201d and said a Paris e-scooter phaseout would undermine efforts to decarbonise transport.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hadi Karam, general manager for France at Lime, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carltonreid\/2023\/04\/03\/parisians-vote-to-remove-rental-e-scooters\/?sh=47829fe9241d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> AFP last week that Paris was going \u201cagainst the current\u201d in seeking to ban rental e-scooters. <\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elsewhere in France, the mayor of Lyon, France\u2019s third largest city, has just agreed to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyonmag.com\/article\/128283\/trottinettes-electriques-tier-mobility-et-dott-renouveles-par-la-ville-de-lyon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>four-year extension<\/span><\/a><span> of its contract with Tier and Dott.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Further afield, New York, London, and Madrid are all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/paris-votes-to-ban-e-scooter-rental-companies-3ac621c7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>expanding<\/span><\/a><span> the use of e-scooters in a bid to decarbonise their transport systems.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It remains to be seen whether Paris\u2019 ban on e-scooters will encourage other cities to follow suit, but it does represent a major blow for Dott, Tier, and Lime, who have now been barred from operating in one of the world\u2019s largest shared micro-mobility markets. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/paris-e-scooters-ban\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Si\u00f4n Geschwindt<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parisians overwhelmingly voted to ban e-scooters on Sunday, in a hotly-debated referendum that has divided the French capital.
