PHOTO: COURTESY OF ICHINOMIYA TOWN, INDUSTRY AND TOURISM DIVISION<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"BodyComponentRenderer\">\n<p><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>Eight dolphins were found washed up on beaches in the Greater Tokyo Area on Tuesday morning, according to local news reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>The mammals, identified as melon-headed whales, looked like they were struggling to breathe, said Mibu Saito, a local official who visited the site nearby Isumi and Ichinomiya in Chiba Prefecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt sorry for all those weak dolphins that had washed ashore and we still don\u2019t know why they were stranded there,\u201d Saito told VICE World News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/span><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>Of the eight found, four were dead, while the rest were returned to the ocean. A day earlier, 33 dolphins were also found beached just a few hundred meters away. Passersby and surfers tried to carry or roll the dolphins towards the ocean, but two died, Saito said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>News of dolphins washing up on Japan\u2019s beaches follows similar reports of whale and dolphin deaths around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>Since early December, 23 dead whales have washed ashore along the U.S.\u2019 east coast. Scientists in France have also observed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/science\/animals\/france-moves-to-ban-fishing-as-unprecedented-amount-of-dolphins-wash-ashore\/news-story\/a0cc57ad0d5f02456d99a84f428898ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">910 dead dolphins<\/a> washed up along the country\u2019s Atlantic coast since the start of winter, prompting the country\u2019s highest court to mandate that the government curb fishing in certain areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-component=\"TextBlock\"><\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, a whale carcass was found in March.
