A member of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni\u2019s party introduced new legislation that would penalize Italians who use English and other foreign words in official communications, in an attempt to stop the invasion of foreign languages in Italy.<\/p>\n

Italians holding\u00a0an office in public administration who use\u00a0foreign words in official communications could face fines of up to \u20ac100,000 ($108,705) under the new proposed law, according to a draft of the legislation\u00a0obtained<\/a> by CNN.<\/p>\n

Fabio Rampelli,\u00a0a member of\u00a0the lower chamber of deputies and Prime Minister Meloni\u2019s Brothers of Italy party, introduced the legislation, which reportedly states that \u201cAnglomania\u201d (the\u00a0use of English words) \u201cdemeans and mortifies\u201d the Italian language.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the Italian Chamber of Deputies we speak Italian. The battle continues on the use of our language instead of English. It is not clear why the hand sanitizer dispenser should be called a \u2018dispenser,’\u201d Rampelli wrote in a November tweet.<\/p>\n

The bill, which has yet to\u00a0go up for debate, would require Italians holding public office to have \u201cwritten and oral knowledge and mastery of the Italian language.\u201d It also forbids the use of English \u2014 including acronyms and names \u2014 in official documents.<\/p>\n

While the proposed legislation includes all foreign languages, it notes that the use of English is an even worse offense, given that the UK is not even a part of the EU anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not just a matter of fashion, as fashions pass, but Anglomania has repercussions for society as a whole,\u201d the draft of the legislation states.<\/p>\n

The bill would also mandate foreign entities to have Italian language editions of all internal regulations and\u00a0employment contracts. It also guarantees that Italian will be the primary language used, even in offices dealing with\u00a0foreigners that do not speak Italian.<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation further states that Italian will be \u201cmandatory\u00a0for the promotion and use of public goods and services in the national territory.\u201d Violating this rule could result in being fined anywhere between \u20ac5,000 ($5,435) and \u20ac100,000 ($108,705).<\/p>\n

Additionally, the bill allows the Culture Ministry to establish a committee tasked with\u00a0making sure the \u201ccorrect use of the Italian language and its pronunciation\u201d\u00a0is being used in schools, media, business, and advertising.<\/p>\n

For example, certain entities mispronouncing the Italian antipasto\u00a0Bruschetta \u2014 by calling it \u201cbru-shetta\u201d instead of \u201cbru-sketta\u201d \u2014 could be punished.<\/p>\n

The move to protect the Italian language in Italy comes as the government also seeks to safeguard the country\u2019s\u00a0cuisine,\u00a0CNN noted.<\/p>\n

Italian lawmakers have also reportedly introduced legislation that would ban\u00a0synthetic or cell-based cuisine over concerns regarding the lack of scientific studies on the effects of synthetic food.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Meloni\u2019s Health Minister Orazio Schillaci said during a press conference that the proposed legislation regarding Italy\u2019s cuisine is also meant to protect \u201cour nation\u2019s heritage and our agriculture based on the Mediterranean diet.\u201d<\/p>\n
