So damn dark you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2zJgmOYAxUk\">likely to be eaten by a grue<\/a>. Then I started watching the <em>Willow <\/em>TV show, where the better part of several episodes take place at night, in a dreary abandoned castle, as the world fills with a deep dark fog. <\/p>\n<p>We could spend <em>hours<\/em> talking about the many terrible choices that led to me watching the <em>Willow<\/em> TV series \u2014 let\u2019s just say mistakes were made, both by me and the showrunner, and that I have words <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23484478\/willow-disney-plus-review-lucasfilm-it-is-great\">for my colleague Alex Cranz<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But late one night, I decided to search Reddit out of perverse curiosity. Turns out it might have less to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23661749\/why-movies-look-dark-cinematography\">a recent trend in filmmaking choices<\/a>, and more to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/appletv\/comments\/rzuhoe\/dolby_vision_on_disney_plus_looks_worse_than\/\">with some weird quirk<\/a> of how Disney Plus is passing Dolby Vision HDR via my set-top box! <\/p>\n<p>After forcing myself to remember that HDR <em>does not make things brighter<\/em> (it\u2019s supposed to make them brighter <em>and<\/em> dimmer, thus the \u201cdynamic range\u201d), I tried tweaking my HDR settings. <\/p>\n<p>The fog was lifted and I could see. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figcaption><em>HDR on vs. HDR off. (Turning off Dolby Vision was more subtle.)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure whether Dolby Vision or HDR are keeping you in the dark, here\u2019s a simple test: pause and rewind until you see thumbnails pop up like the ones in my image slider above.
