When cells have too much junk, it takes up space and prevents cells from functioning as they should. Problems with autophagy have been linked to chronic conditions, like heart, kidney, and liver disease.  <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"8\">But, there are things you can do to enhance autophagy, which can be good for your health. <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"9\"><strong>What Is Autophagy? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"10\">Cells make up every tissue and organ in your body, and each one contains different parts that keep it working properly. Autophagy cleans out the junk so new healthy cells can be created.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"13\">\u201cWe constantly have autophagy going on,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usf.edu\/medicine\/mpp\/faculty\/ddagosti\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/health.usf.edu\/medicine\/mpp\/faculty\/ddagosti\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Dominic D\u2019Agostino, Ph.D.,\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Dominic D\u2019Agostino, Ph.D.,<\/u><\/a> research scientist and professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"University of South Florida\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>University of South Florida<\/u><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a balance.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"14\">It\u2019s a process of cell recycling that happens when cells are deprived of nutrients or oxygen, he says. The cells basically eat themselves to survive, and being in survival mode helps make the cell work more efficiently. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"15\">\u201cIf we do not undergo autophagy, we build up and accumulate damaged cells in our body,\u201d D\u2019Agostino says. \u201cThat can cause a wide variety of processes that can impact our general health, our immune system, our psychological well-being, and the state of inflammation in our body.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"16\"><strong>How Can You Enhance Autophagy? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"17\">Autophagy is a natural process, but there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to induce the process, Dr. Trinh says. But, when they don\u2019t, cells go into maintenance and repair mode. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"22\">Eating meal after meal with snacks in between often keeps cells in a state of growth and division, and never deprives cells of nutrients and offers an opportunity for autophagy, Dr. Trinh says. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"23\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/technology-gear\/a36431479\/mens-health-intermittent-fasting-guide-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/technology-gear\/a36431479\/mens-health-intermittent-fasting-guide-deal\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Intermittent fasting\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Intermittent fasting<\/u><\/a>\u2014when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/intermittent-fasting\/faq-20441303\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/intermittent-fasting\/faq-20441303\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"don\u2019t eat for a period of time\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>don\u2019t eat for a period of time<\/u><\/a> each day\u2014deprives cells of nutrients for a time and automatically triggers the maintenance and repair stage, and autophagy. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"24\">How long to fast for autophagy to begin is up for debate. Some research suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/24058-autophagy#:~:text=How%20long%20do%20you%20have,timing%20to%20trigger%20human%20autophagy.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/24058-autophagy#:~:text=How%20long%20do%20you%20have,timing%20to%20trigger%20human%20autophagy.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"24 to 48 hours\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>24 to 48 hours<\/u><\/a> is necessary, but Dr. Trinh says 12 hours can start the process.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"25\">The research on the relationship between intermittent fasting and autophagy is still ongoing, and most of it so far has been conducted on animals. So, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/autophagy.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/autophagy.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"no strong conclusive evidence\" rel=\"noopener\">no strong conclusive evidence<\/a> that specific eating patterns can optimize autophagy.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"26\"><strong>Keto Diets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"27\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a19530409\/ketogenic-ketosis-diet-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a19530409\/ketogenic-ketosis-diet-for-beginners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"keto diet\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>keto diet<\/u><\/a>, which is high in fat and low in carbs, triggers autophagy in a similar way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a38676161\/starting-sticking-with-intermittent-fasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a38676161\/starting-sticking-with-intermittent-fasting\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"intermittent fasting\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>intermittent fasting<\/u><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"28\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a38656246\/keto-diet-common-mistakes-advice-mark-bell-thomas-delauer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a38656246\/keto-diet-common-mistakes-advice-mark-bell-thomas-delauer\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"keto\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>keto<\/u><\/a>, your body learns to change its energy source from carbs to fat, a process known as ketosis. And, this can lead to autophagy, D\u2019Agostino says. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"29\">\u201cBeing in a state of nutritional ketosis mimics many aspects of fasting because it suppresses the hormone insulin, and if insulin is low, the body is basically in a state of accelerated fat burning,\u201d he says. \u201cThe lower the level of insulin, the higher the rate of autophagy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"30\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33705944\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33705944\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Research\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> on a keto diet&#8217;s ability to enhance autophagy is still new, and most studies have been conducted on animals. So it&#8217;s tough to draw a conclusive connection just yet.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"31\"><strong>Exercise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"32\">Regular exercise has been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5538402\/#:~:text=Numerous%20studies%20have%20provided%20evidence,resulting%20in%20enhanced%20autophagy%20capacity.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5538402\/#:~:text=Numerous%20studies%20have%20provided%20evidence,resulting%20in%20enhanced%20autophagy%20capacity.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stress your skeletal muscles\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>stress your skeletal muscles<\/u><\/a>, which can induce autophagy. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"33\">\u201cExercise burns up any extra sugar that you have in your bloodstream to allow your body to be like, \u2018Hey, there\u2019s no sugar. Let\u2019s switch over to maintenance and repair,\u2019\u201d Dr. Trinh says.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"34\">One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3463459\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3463459\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>study<\/u><\/a> showed that a mouse running on a treadmill for 30 minutes drastically increased the level of autophagy happening in muscle cells. <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"35\"><strong>The Benefits of Enhancing Autophagy <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"36\">Autophagy is crucial for recycling cell parts, getting rid of nonfunctioning cell parts, and destroying pathogens in cells, like viruses and bacteria. Most research on autophagy and its relationship to diseases hasn\u2019t been conducted on humans, but scientists believe the process can play a role in disease prevention. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"37\">For instance, D\u2019Agostino says autophagy can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcell.2020.00138\/full#:~:text=In%20various%20stem%20cell%20systems,reactive%20oxygen%20species%20(ROS).\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcell.2020.00138\/full#:~:text=In%20various%20stem%20cell%20systems,reactive%20oxygen%20species%20(ROS).\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stimulate the production of stem cells\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>stimulate the production of stem cells<\/u><\/a>, which helps restore and promote a stronger immune system, D\u2019Agostino says. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"38\">Autophagy also has been linked to anti-aging benefits, Dr. Trinh says. As people age, autophagy can decrease, which causes a build-up of junk from cells, keeping them from functioning at their best. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"39\">Problems with autophagy have been linked to a number of chronic health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, Crohn\u2019s disease, liver disease, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and cancer, according to the Cleveland Clinic. <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"40\"><strong>Autophagy and Weight Loss<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"41\">Autophagy itself likely won\u2019t make you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/a38255565\/trx-keto-pandemic-weight-loss-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/weight-loss\/a38255565\/trx-keto-pandemic-weight-loss-transformation\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lose weight.\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>lose weight.<\/u><\/a> But, intermittent fasting, keto diets, and exercise, which enhance autophagy, often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5783752\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5783752\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lead to weight loss\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>lead to weight loss<\/u><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"42\">Since the process affects your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6531852\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6531852\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"levels of hormones\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>levels of hormones<\/u><\/a> like insulin and glucagon, it might decrease hunger levels, which could reduce your calorie intake, helping you lose weight. <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"43\"><strong>Are There Any Risks With Enhancing Autophagy? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"44\">Taking steps to enhance autophagy is safe for most people. D\u2019Agostino says if you\u2019re underweight, it\u2019s not a good idea, though. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"45\">It also might not be safe for people with diabetes or pregnant women to restrict calories or start a keto diet. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"46\">Anytime you want to change your diet, such as to start intermittent fasting or keto, or rev up your exercise routine, Dr. Trinh says it\u2019s best to talk to your doctor first. <\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"47\">Does Enhancing Autophagy Really Work? <\/h2>\n<p data-node-id=\"48\">Research on autophagy is ongoing. There is some early promising research showing that diet and exercise can help you enhance the process. But, it&#8217;s important to note that most studies have been conducted on animals, not humans.
