Its turnover rose by 16 per cent from 2021 (\u00a31.5bn) and 36 per cent from 2020 (\u00a31.3bn).<\/p>\n<p>However, pre-tax profit dropped by \u00a32.2m, or 6 per cent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/wates\/housing-boom-pushes-wates-above-pre-pandemic-profit-22-03-2022\/\">from 2021.<\/a>\u00a0The group therefore had a 1.7 per profit margin in 2022, compared with 2.4 per cent in 2021. Profit was still comfortably above the \u00a3839,000 Wates made in 2020 during Covid.<\/p>\n<p>Wates said the year contained \u201cstrong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/inflation-adds-23bn-to-annual-construction-output-costs-15-02-2023\/\">inflationary pressure<\/a>, interest rates and other economic headwinds\u201d and pointed out that its tax bill increased from \u00a3233m in 2021 to \u00a3313m in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The group had 4,021 employees across the year, building 4,626 homes and working on 683 construction sites. The business also managed and maintained 500,000 social housing properties as well as 701 commercial buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Wates&#8217; 1,722-person construction division turned over \u00a3958m \u2013 up year-on-year by 24 per cent \u2013 with an average project value of \u00a343m across 51 sites. It completed projects including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/project-reports\/wates-delivers-a-commonwealth-games-legacy-project-21-11-2022\/\">Sandwell Aquatics Centre<\/a>, one of the venues for Birmingham\u2019s 2022 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Wates also signed a contract for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/wates\/wates-confirmed-on-450m-gigafactory-12-12-2022\/\">largest-ever construction project<\/a> \u2013 the \u00a3500m Envision AESC gigafactory, which will make electric vehicle batteries in Sunderland. At the end of 2022 the firm had carried out over \u00a3100m of work on the project.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s 48-person development arm, meanwhile, turned over \u00a3123m, from a capital investment of \u00a3148m. It sold 414 homes during the year, with a further 15,812 homes in the planning pipeline. The group also has 127 businesses across its Needspace flexible workspace brand.<\/p>\n<p>Wates\u2019 residential business turned over \u00a3310m, up by \u00a342m, or 14 per cent, completing 739 homes in the year and selling 119. At the end of 2022, the division had a further 2,605 homes under construction and employed 365 people.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s 1,478-employee property services arm turned over \u00a3499m, working on 2,686 retrofit projects and fit-out projects valued at up to \u00a330m.<\/p>\n<p>Wates did not disclose pre-tax profit figures for its divisions, but stated that each of its businesses was profitable in 2022. The group made \u00a372m of provisions, which includes an undisclosed amount which relates to fire safety issues.<\/p>\n<p>Wates chief executive Eoghan O\u2019Lionaird, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/wates\/wates-names-new-ceo-01-02-2023\/\">joined the firm in February<\/a> from marine and oil and gas contractor James Fisher and Sons, said: \u201cThese results in our 125th year represent a really strong performance in the context of a challenging economic environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of our divisions have contributed strongly to profitability and I am delighted to see such consistency across the group. 2022 saw us continue our upward trajectory on turnover, reaching \u00a31.89bn \u2013 the highest in our history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis high figure reflects the strong and stable family governance, hard work of people across the business, the scale of our ambition, our proven capability to manage largescale projects of strategic national significance, and our customers\u2019 confidence in our ability to deliver for them, particularly in the public sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a strong, resilient position, with profitability across all our divisions, another record forward-order book, and a solid cash balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/wates\/wates-profit-falls-despite-record-1-9bn-turnover-30-03-2023\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Will Ing<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wates made a pre-tax profit of \u00a333.7m in 2022 from a record turnover of \u00a31.9bn.
