So no one told Jennifer Aniston<\/a> life was gonna be this way.<\/p>\n

The show that catapulted her to fame is now widely viewed as unfriendly and even offensive, a tragedy for comedy, she recently said.<\/p>\n

\u201cComedy has evolved, movies have evolved,\u201d Ms. Aniston<\/a> told<\/a> Agency France-Presse this week promoting her new Netflix film \u201cMurder Mystery 2.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York-set \u201cFriends\u201d debuted in 1994 and not only were all six principal cast members White but there were few minorities even in recurring and supporting roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of \u2018Friends\u2019 and find them offensive,\u201d she said, though she didn\u2019t specify the grounds for offense-taking herself.<\/p>\n

But Ms. Aniston<\/a> said that while the show should have done better, its failures weren\u2019t intentional.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were things that were never intentional and others \u2026 well, we should have thought it through. But I don\u2019t think there was a sensitivity like there is now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

And these contemporary sensitivities have made comedy difficult, even with the best of intentions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow it\u2019s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,\u201d Ms. Aniston<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

In the past, \u201cyou could joke about a bigot and have a laugh \u2014 that was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were,\u201d she said. \u201cNow we\u2019re not allowed to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world needs humor! We can\u2019t take ourselves too seriously. Especially in the United States. Everyone is far too divided,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
