That\u2019s Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, the company behind the increasingly popular \u2014 and sometimes controversial \u2014 ChatGPT application. As in the chatbot that lets users engage in seemingly meaningful dialogue with it. Or that can be used to create everything from poems<\/a> to school essays<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an interview with ABC News<\/a>, Altman spoke of the promise of ChatGPT, saying it could be \u201cthe greatest technology humanity has yet developed.\u201d But he sounded alarms as well.<\/p>\n

In particular, he spoke about the aforementioned threat of spreading disinformation, saying ChatGPT \u201ccould be used for offensive cyberattacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another issue: ChatGPT can simply get it wrong when people ask it a question \u2014what Altman described as the \u201challucinations problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe model will confidently state things as if they were facts that are entirely made up,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the same time, as newer iterations of ChatGPT are developed, the application appears to be getting \u201csmarter\u201d \u2014 for lack of a better word. According to ABC, ChatGPT \u201cscored in the 90th percentile on the Uniform Bar Exam [for aspiring attorneys]. It also scored a near-perfect score on the SAT Math test, and it can now proficiently write computer code in most programming languages.\u201d<\/p>\n

Altman, however, doesn\u2019t see any scenarios, a la sci-fi movies like \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey,\u201d in which artificial intelligence takes control over humans and wreaks havoc on the planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

ChatGPT \u201cwaits for someone to give it an input,\u201d Altman explained. \u201cThis is a tool that is very much in human control.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
