From the first movie\u2019s humble origins as a B-movie quietly launched in the fall of 2014 to the latest installment <em>John Wick: Chapter 4<\/em>\u2018s big-budget tentpole release, the John Wick movies have only grown in popularity and critical acclaim in the nine years it has existed.<\/p>\n<p>Every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/best-action-scenes-john-wick-franchise-ranked\/\">John Wick movie has been praised for its innovative action<\/a> and stylish direction, but which one ranks at the top? Is it the original John Wick, which established the series in the first place? Or is it <em>Parabellum<\/em>, which dramatically expanded the scope and depth of the franchise? The following is a list of all the John Wick movies, ranked in ascending order by their Rotten Tomatoes score.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dt-heading-4-john-wick-86\" aria-label=\"4. John Wick (86%)\"><\/a>4. John Wick (86%)<\/h2>\n<div data-provider=\"youtube\">\n<p>John Wick (2014) &#8211; Official Trailer &#8211; Keanu Reeves<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s shocking to find out that the original <em>John Wick<\/em>, the one that started it all, is the worst-reviewed movie of the series. Don\u2019t be mistaken though; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/john_wick\/reviews?type=top_critics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">86% score<\/a> is very impressive, not only for an action film but for any film in any genre. The movie introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/keanu-reeves-best-action-movies-ranked\/\">action movie vet Keanu Reeves<\/a>\u00a0as the titular assassin, who, still mourning the death of his wife, accepts a last gift from her: an adorable puppy. This being an action movie, the dog is brutally killed by a Russian gang, and Wick seeks revenge for his beloved pup.<\/p>\n<p>Most critics like <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3536452\/keanu-reeves-john-wick-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time\u2019s Richard Corliss praised<\/a> director Chad Stahelski\u2019s unique approach to a tired trope, the brooding killer, by \u201cbring[ing] a sleek, chic gusto to the six or seven big action scenes, shooting the mayhem in longish takes rather than chopping it into short shots.\u201d Similarly, Reeves, whose flagging career was revived due to the success of the film, was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/arts\/review\/keanu-reeves-in-john-wick-offers-plenty-of-bang-for-your-buck\/story-fn9n8gph-1227107422192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">singled out<\/a> as being \u201cin his element: a natural in hard-edged action thrillers from <em>Speed<\/em> to <em>The Matrix<\/em>, he has the benefit of a screenplay that gives him little to say.\u201d The people who did initially catch <em>John Wick<\/em> in theaters agreed, and helped spread the word about the movie, which really caught fire on DVDs and streaming.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dt-heading-3-john-wick-chapter-2-89\" aria-label=\"3. John Wick: Chapter 2 (89%)\"><\/a>3. John Wick: Chapter 2 (89%)<\/h2>\n<p>With <em>John Wick<\/em> quickly becoming a word-of-mouth sleeper hit, it was only inevitable that a sequel would be made. Three years later, <em>John Wick: Chapter 2<\/em> came out in 207, continuing the story of Reeves\u2019 assassin as he\u2019s drawn into his past profession by Italian gangsters and the mysterious ways of The Continental, the super secret organization that pretty much every assassin belongs to in this world. A bigger budget meant more action and more stars, so joining Reeves in this chapter was his old <em>Matrix<\/em> co-star Laurence Fishburne, Common, Ruby Rose, and John Leguizamo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/john_wick_chapter_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Chapter 2<\/em><\/a> turned out to be the rare sequel that exceeded the original as critics welcomed back Wick and his hyper-realized world of secret societies, blood oaths, and archaic codes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2017\/02\/09\/movie-review-keanu-reeves-kills-thrilling-john-wick\/97662884\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Detroit News\u2019 Adam Graham<\/a> praised the film, claiming that \u201cin the wrong hands, this type of thing could be a drag, but <em>John Wick 2<\/em> is one of the most fun action pictures in recent memory.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/entertainment\/keanu-reeves-back-with-a-vengeance-in-john-wick-chapter-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times<\/a> thought Reeves was why the sequel worked, rhetorically asking \u201cwho would have guessed Keanu Reeves\u2019 stoic, black-clad, one-man killing machine would become THE go-to bad guy\/action hero of the 2010s?\u201d Audiences answered in the affirmative, doubling the total gross of its predecessor and demanding a third chapter in the series.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dt-heading-2-john-wick-chapter-3--parabellum-89\" aria-label=\"2. Like the last one, the third John Wick brought in even bigger names like Oscar-winners Halle Berry and Angelica Huston and expanded the word of Wick and the Continental, making the High Table a legitimate threat and planting the seeds for future spinoffs like the Ana de Armas-led <em>Ballerina<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/john_wick_chapter_3_parabellum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Chapter 3<\/em><\/a> received just as many accolades as <em>Chapter 2<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/05\/16\/723957760\/there-is-no-spoon-but-theres-plenty-of-knives-in-john-wick-chapter-3-parabellum?utm_medium=RSS&#038;utm_campaign=movies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR\u2019s Chris Klimek<\/a> compared the John Wick movies to another beloved action franchise by asserting that \u201cthe set pieces are more imaginative and daring than ever. There\u2019s a musicality and wit to the action that only the Mission: Impossible series can equal.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/movies\/sc-mov-john-wick-3-keanu-review-0514-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Chicago Tribune\u2019s Michael Phillips<\/a> proclaimed <em>Parabellum<\/em> \u201cthe best of the three so far\u201d while <a href=\"https:\/\/lwlies.com\/reviews\/john-wick-chapter-3-parabellum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little White Lies\u2019 Matthew Thrift<\/a> thought that it was an \u201castonishing spectacle of action and staging.\u201d Again, moviegoing audiences couldn\u2019t get enough, with <em>Parabellum<\/em> becoming the highest-grossing John Wick film yet with $328 million in the bank.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dt-heading-1-john-wick-chapter-4-95\" aria-label=\"1. [Better yet, don\u2019t.] But <em>John Wick: Chapter 4<\/em> bucked the trend, becoming the most highly praised installment in the nearly decade-old franchise. With its 169-minute runtime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/john-wick-chapter-4-stunt-team-interview\/\">epic action scenes<\/a> that rival <em>Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em>\u2018s jaw-dropping stunts, and an extended cast that now includes martial arts master Donnie Yen, <em>It<\/em> actor Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd, and pop singer Rina Sawayama, <em>Chapter 4<\/em> pushed the series forward in exciting new directions, and could be the most successful John Wick movie yet.<\/p>\n<p>With its impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/john_wick_chapter_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">95% Rotten Tomatoes rating<\/a>, it\u2019s not only the most well-reviewed John Wick movie so far, but one of 2023\u2019s best pictures as well. The critical consensus is echoed in <a href=\"https:\/\/moviefreak.com\/john-wick-chapter-4-2023-movie-review\/#.ZB8ATXbMJPY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MovieFreak.com\u2019<\/a>s review, where critic Sarah Michelle Fetters writes that \u201cfew series of this type have maintained this level of quality and ingenuity over four installments without growing stale.\u201d Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/23\/movies\/john-wick-chapter-4-keanu-reeves.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times loved it<\/a>, proclaiming <em>Chapter 4<\/em> was \u201cpure, eye-popping, body-shaking, transporting entertainment, something that (to borrow from another philosopher) has a good beat and you can dance to.\u201d While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/john-wick-chapter-4-review\/\">Digital Trends\u2019 own review of <em>John Wick: Chapter 4<\/em> was mixed<\/a>, that was just one of the few who found fault with it, and the movie received near unanimous praise.
