{"id":621262,"date":"2023-03-23T17:49:32","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T22:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/23\/fresh-produce-is-an-increasingly-popular-prescription-for-chronically-ill-patients\/"},"modified":"2023-03-23T17:49:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T22:49:32","slug":"fresh-produce-is-an-increasingly-popular-prescription-for-chronically-ill-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/23\/fresh-produce-is-an-increasingly-popular-prescription-for-chronically-ill-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh Produce Is an Increasingly Popular Prescription for Chronically Ill Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>When Mackenzie Sachs, a registered dietitian on the Blackfeet Reservation, in northwestern Montana, sees a patient experiencing high blood pressure, diabetes, or another chronic illness, her first thought isn\u2019t necessarily to recommend medication.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, if the patient doesn\u2019t have easy access to fruit and vegetables, she\u2019ll enroll the person in the FAST Blackfeet produce prescription program. FAST, which stands for Food Access and Sustainability Team, provides vouchers to people who are ill or have insecure food access to reduce their cost for healthy foods. Since 2021, Sachs has recommended a fruit-and-vegetable treatment plan to 84 patients. Increased consumption of vitamins, fiber, and minerals has improved those patients\u2019 health, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vouchers help me feel confident that the patients will be able to buy the foods I\u2019m recommending they eat,\u201d she said. \u201cI know other dietitians don\u2019t have that assurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sachs is one of a growing number of health providers across Montana who now have the option to write a different kind of prescription \u2014 not for pills, but for produce.<\/p>\n<p>The Montana Produce Prescription Collaborative, or MTPRx, brings together several nonprofits and health care providers across Montana. Led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cfacmontana.org\/\">Community Food &#038; Agriculture Coalition<\/a>, the initiative was recently awarded a federal grant of $500,000 to support Montana produce prescription programs throughout the state over the next three years, with the goal of reaching more than 200 people across 14 counties in the first year.<\/p>\n<p>Participating partners screen patients for chronic health conditions and food access. Eligible patients receive prescriptions in the form of vouchers or coupons for fresh fruits and vegetables that can be redeemed at farmers markets, food banks, and stores. During the winter months, when many farmers markets close, MTPRx partners rely more heavily on stores, food banks, and nonprofit food organizations to get fruits and vegetables to patients.<\/p>\n<p>The irony is that rural areas, where food is often grown, can also be food deserts for their residents. <a href=\"https:\/\/chlpi.org\/about-us\/staff\/katie-garfield\/\">Katie Garfield<\/a>, a researcher and clinical instructor with <a href=\"https:\/\/chlpi.org\/project\/food-is-medicine\/\">Harvard\u2019s Food is Medicine project<\/a>, said produce prescription programs in rural areas are less likely than others to have reliable access to produce through grocers or other retailers. A <a href=\"https:\/\/bestpractices.nokidhungry.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-04\/Rural%20Produce%20Prescription%20Toolkit_4.2022.pdf\">report from No Kid Hungry<\/a> concluded 91% of the counties nationwide whose residents have the most difficulty accessing adequate and nutritious food are rural.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiet-related chronic illness is really an epidemic in the United States,\u201d Garfield said. \u201cThose high rates of chronic conditions are associated with huge human and economic costs. The idea of being able to bend the curve of diet-related chronic disease needs to be at the forefront of health care policy right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1663\" height=\"1850\" src=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/food-prescriptions-1.jpg\" alt  ><figcaption>An example of a voucher for fresh produce distributed by the FAST Blackfeet produce prescription program. FAST, which stands for Food Access and Sustainability Team, provides vouchers to people who are ill or have insecure food access on the Blackfeet reservation. <span>(FAST Blackfeet)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Produce prescription programs have been around <a href=\"https:\/\/chlpi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Produce-RX-March-2021.pdf\">since the 1960s<\/a>, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/28\/health\/h-jack-geiger-dead.html\">Dr. Jack Geiger<\/a> opened a clinic in Mound Bayou, a small city in the Mississippi Delta. There, Dr. Geiger saw the need for \u201csocial medicine\u201d to treat the chronic health conditions he saw, many the result of poverty. He prescribed food to families with malnourished children and paid for it out of the clinic\u2019s pharmacy budget.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.daisaenterprises.com\/uploads\/4\/4\/0\/5\/44054359\/exec_summary_recommendations_produce_prescription_programs_april_2021_newfinal.pdf\">A study<\/a> by the consulting firm DAISA Enterprises identified 108 produce prescription programs in the U.S., all partnered with health care facilities, that launched between 2010 and 2020, with 30% in the Northeast and 28% in the Midwest. Early results show the promise of integrating produce into a clinician-guided treatment plan, but the viability of the approach is less proven in rural communities such as many of those in Montana.<\/p>\n<p>In Montana, 31,000 children do not have consistent access to food, <a href=\"https:\/\/mfbn.org\/hunger-in-montana\/\">according to<\/a> the Montana Food Bank Network. Half of the state\u2019s 56 counties are considered food deserts, where low-income residents must travel more than 10 miles to the nearest supermarket \u2014 which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/food-access-research-atlas\/documentation\/#:~:text=Low%2Daccess%20tract%20at%2010,supercenter%2C%20or%20large%20grocery%20store.\">one definition<\/a> the U.S Department of Agriculture uses for low food access in a rural area.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows long travel distances and lack of transportation are significant barriers to accessing healthy food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving in an agriculturally rich community, it\u2019s easy to assume everyone has access,\u201d said Gretchen Boyer, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/landtohandmt.org\/programs\/food-for-all\/\">Land to Hand Montana<\/a>. The organization works with nearby health care system Logan Health to provide more than 100 people with regular produce allotments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood and nutritional insecurity are rampant everywhere, and if you grow up in generational poverty you probably haven\u2019t had access to fruits and vegetables at a regular rate your whole life,\u201d Boyer said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 9% of Montana adults have Type 2 diabetes and nearly 35% are pre-diabetic, according to Merry Hutton, regional director of community health investment for Providence, a health care provider that operates clinics throughout western Montana and is one of the MTPRx clinical partners.<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Coburn, a family nurse practitioner at Logan Health, sees these conditions often in the population she serves, but she believes produce prescriptions have tremendous capacity to improve patients\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReal food matters and increasing fruits and veggies can reverse some forms of diabetes, eliminate elevated cholesterol, and impact blood pressure in a positive way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3161\" height=\"2994\" src=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/food-prescriptions-3.jpg\" alt  ><figcaption>Mackenzie Sachs, a registered dietitian, and Thedra Bird Rattler, a nutrition education specialist, work for FAST Blackfeet. <span>(FAST Blackfeet)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Produce prescription programs have the potential to reduce the costs of treating chronic health conditions that overburden the broader health care system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we treat food as part of health care treatment and prevention plans, we are going to get improved outcomes and reduced health care costs,\u201d Garfield said. \u201cIf diet is driving health outcomes in the United States, then diet needs to be a centerpiece of health policy moving forward. Otherwise, it\u2019s a missed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question is, Do food prescription initiatives work? They typically lack the funding needed to foster long-term, sustainable change, and they often fail to track data that shows the relationship between increased produce consumption and improved health, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/08901171211056584\">comprehensive survey of over 6,000 studies<\/a> on such programs.<\/p>\n<p>Data collection is key for MTPRx, and partners and health care providers track how participation in the program influences participants\u2019 essential health indicators such as blood sugar, lipids, and cholesterol, organizers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to see these results and use them to make this more of a norm,\u201d said Bridget McDonald, the MTPRx program director at CFAC. \u201cWe want to make the \u2018food is medicine\u2019 movement mainstream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sachs acknowledged that \u201csome conditions can\u2019t usually be reversed,\u201d which means some patients may need medication too.<\/p>\n<p>However, MTPRx partners hope to make the case that produce prescriptions should be considered a viable clinical intervention on a larger scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we may be able to advocate for funding and policy change,\u201d Sachs said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/article\/food-prescriptions-montana-indigenous-nutrition-fast-blackfeet-nation\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Carly Graf<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Mackenzie Sachs, a registered dietitian on the Blackfeet Reservation, in northwestern Montana, sees a patient experiencing high blood pressure, diabetes, or another chronic illness, her first thought isn\u2019t necessarily to recommend medication.
