For a huge chunk of the PC gaming community, Counter-Strike<\/em> defined team-based first-person shooters. Now there\u2019s a sequel: Counter-Strike 2<\/em>, which will debut this summer from Valve Software. You can test it out, too.<\/p>\n

The game\u2019s developers describe it as \u201cthe next era of Counter-Strike<\/em>,\u201d and it\u2019s not hard to see why. Counter-Strike 2<\/em>\u2018s gameplay video looks up-to-date and that\u2019s saying something, especially for a game that players have valued more for its gameplay than anything else. Counter-Strike 2<\/em> will be released as a free upgrade to the current Counter-Strike: Global Offensive<\/em> (CS:GO).<\/p>\n

Smoke grenades sound interesting, as they\u2019ll now be volumetric objects that can react to their environments, including being pushed away by bullets and even grenades. You\u2019ll see it expand to fill spaces, as you\u2019d expect it to.<\/p>\n

\n<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There are also updates for how <em>Counter-Strike 2<\/em> manages player interactions. Today, that\u2019s overseen by what\u2019s known as a \u201ctick rate,\u201d where the server \u201cchecks\u201d what each player\u2019s doing on a regular \u201ctick.\u201d Now, things are a bit different. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSub-tick updates are the heart of <em>Counter-Strike 2<\/em>,\u201d the developers . Previously, the server only evaluated the world in discrete time intervals (called ticks). Thanks to <em>Counter-Strike 2<\/em>\u2019s sub-tick update architecture, servers know the exact instant that motion starts, a shot is fired, or a \u2018nade is thrown. As a result, regardless of tick rate, your moving and shooting will be equally responsive and your grenades will always land the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you join the <em>Counter-Strike 2<\/em> beta? Well, if you\u2019re a frequent player you stand a better chance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlayers are selected for the <em>Counter-Strike 2 <\/em>Limited Test based on a number of factors deemed important by the <em>Counter-Strike 2<\/em> development team, including (but not limited to) recent playtime on Valve official servers, trust factor, and Steam account standing,\u201d the team . <\/p>\n<p>Talk about a big day for PC gaming.
